Urban Music's New Chapter
Brought up out of an era when fashion, technology, and urban innovation began to take over globally, a young man from Newark NJ was definitely paying attention to the process, his name is Orikl As Salaam.
"Growing up as an art student in fine arts and music I was and am always hungry for the next form of expression to create for the world, and to absorb from the world. I am so comfortable in my shell when Im writing and arranging a song, or when Im creating the art direction for a photo-shoot to express the musical emotion that I intend my audience to feel. This is my primary joy in life…expressing myself."
Orikl has performed "Off - Broadway" nationally in plays such as Smokey Joe's Cafe, Dreamgirls, Aint Misbehavin', and handfuls of local productions in the NYC metro area.
"Musical theatre for me was mostly a way for me to develop my stage show for my own original music performances. I really wanted to improve how i communicated my sound to the people. so I studied theatre, auditioned and torrid for a bit. When i came back to my own world, I had so much more to give. There is a vounerablity that happens in theatre that helps any performer develop the ability of recovery. Anything can happen on stage, so you learn how to trust yourself, Its very empowering. My live show can get very theatrical in its delivery…so I've been told..lol."
Visually Orikl taps into using fashion photography in partnership with the music he writes. His many looks from a blond mowhawk to a soldier cut expresses the idea of the music. Orikl is known by his supporters and friends alike to never look the same with his distinct fashion sense and photogenic prowess.
"Its important for me to not just write music, but to give each piece a "look" to complete the story. I live in #D as we all do, but for me I have to have my art, my music be as 3D as life is. The photos help me achieve this. I want my audience to be able to see a photo and be able to feel the emotion that i tapped into to create the music. Photography is so relevant to my sound actually. Im not complete without music and visual in unison even mores than video because its easy to conceptualize and idea and do it in 3 min., but the real test is can you do it in a single shot? thats the real test always for me and I love it."
Headed for the stars Orikl ha secured a underground fanbase that spans from the NY/NJ jazz scene, to the urban hipster/hip hop movement, to the LGBT community, which has nominated him for a OMA ( Out Music Award) and he will be going to Las Vegas to perform at the Planet Hollywood Theatre … and take home the gold!
Orikl's uniqueness speaks for itself in his singing/songwriting and visual delivery onstage and in print. He is urban musics new chapter.
