Big Mono is a three-piece American indie rock band drawing its influences from the first wave of punk, as well as the post-punk movement, and on through to jangle pop. Vocalist James Graham plays bass guitar, Jared Hamilton is lead guitarist and Mark Berry is the drummer. In February 2011, the band was born from the musical collaboration of long-time friends Jared and James in Gold Hill, Oregon. In the short 6 months since the birth of Big Mono, the duo has self produced a five song EP, “Another Successful Day of Being Alone”, which was released in April of this year, and have also made five music videos. Mark joined the band on drums in June and quickly became part of the creative process and ongoing musical collaboration with Jared and James. The band of three recently finished a soon to be released LP, “Con Stereo.”
Big Mono has found a way of paying homage to their favorite influences such as Guided by Voices, The Walkmen, Morrissey, Magnetic Fields, and The Smoking Popes. Yet they remain uniquely themselves. Their songs are honest, packed full of melody, and have a willingness to share their own daily struggle with the rest of the world. While the band is a collaborative effort, James is an avid songwriter, generating hundreds of songs a year, some of which Big Mono use as a creative springboard.
The band’s original lyrics and soulfulness do not represent disenfranchised and nihilistic music, or a willingness to surrender, but rather, an introspective examination of how one could find out that, much to one’s surprise, you just might be walking in the wrong direction. Creative simplicity does away with the ever present guitar solo, musical pretentiousness, and ego driven rock which sadly seems to be the standard in this age of post-post-post punk. BIG MONO is new. Their music brings a fresh air of honesty, returning you to the two-minute pop song.
Oh, and by the way, IT ROCKS!
