Jared Smith started his music education at the age of 8 learning the piano. He never fully appreciated his piano knowledge until a little later in life. At age 13 he started playing percussion in the Junior High School Band, Choir, and had private lessons. When he was 14 years old he was a percussionist in the adult community orchestra. When he was 15, the percussion director at Brigham Young University Idaho invited him to become a member of Rix Stix, the university’s percussion ensemble. While in Rix Stix he had the pleasure of performing with other college groups like the indoor drumline and jazz big bands. He also met Jay Lawrence, who is to this day a great friend and who he still studies under. Through Jay, Jared has been able to meet with his idols, such as Jeff Hamilton, Kenny Aronoff, David Garibaldi, Rick Latham, Greg Upchurch, Jim Riley, and many more. Through high school, Jared performed in the high school jazz bands, concert bands, and choirs, as well as performing in various college groups and creating rock and jazz groups of his own. He also expanded his knowledge on the piano and took voice lessons. Before the age of 20, Jared has performed with many musical acts including Ed Calle, Amprage, Kristen Korb, Papa Chan, Mecham/Smith Project, Core, Eric Marianthal, Retro Zero, The Secret Splendor, Annie’s Water Burial, The Eastern Idaho Jazz and Blues Society House Band, Quahitas, and many more as well as opening for groups like Trust Co., Psychostick, and Bank to name a few.
