The Small Horse is an original rock band from Matawan, New Jersey.
With a nod to the early legends of Rock n’ Roll, The Small Horse blends classic Blues and Country sounds with edgy Indie Rock. Employing an organic approach to songwriting, they operate under the mentality that crafting a song is all about collaboration. Egos are tossed aside in favor of the single most important thing – the music. In doing so, they have been able to establish a solid connection with their core audience: music lovers looking for authentic, well-written songs and a band that clearly loves what they’re doing. Their live shows are an experience in themselves, with enthusiastic crowds feeding off the energy of the band as they play.
After gaining years of experience in local bands, the members of The Small Horse are no strangers to the New Jersey music scene. Started initially as a recording project, the founding members, guitarist Brian Cimino and singer Dan Blumig, brought in drummer Mike Haughey to help.
The song writing continued, but the three were eager to add other elements to create a deeper, richer sound. Bassist Jeff Del Mastro, a long-time friend of Blumig’s, was the perfect fit to compliment the music. The band was then lucky enough to acquire a second guitarist in Marc Adam Tappan, another veteran of the New Jersey original music scene. Once the five played together for the first time, they knew they had discovered something unique – not only in the music they were creating together, but also in the shared love of collaboration and playing for a live audience.
The Small Horse’s first official release was in May 2011. The EP Under Watchful Eyes is the perfect introduction in to the band’s unique collaborative sound. These first tracks mark the starting point in what has proven to be a fruitful and evolving collaboration.
