The Sun Parade / Bio

Short Take:

The Sun Parade works in the great American rock tradition, smuggling rogue love and existential urgency into the room on get-happy grooves. Their new EP Heart's Out delivers on the promise of earlier songwriting with a catalog of love collisions; casual sandwich obsession; and Northern, psychedelic, basement guitar licks. Influences of Afro-pop, Elliott Smith, bluegrass brother harmonies, and four gents from Liverpool.

Based in Northampton MA since 2011, The Sun Parade has been steadily creating a buzz in New England and a grassroots following of fans across the country. In 2012 The Sun Parade released a full length LP “Yossis” and the single “Need You By My Side”, a regional hit voted the #1 song by WRSI 93.9 The River. In 2014, they released the joyful pop EP "Heart's Out" and toured the road, including a host of shows with their pals Lake Street Dive. 2015 will find them continuing to spread the good music, touring the Northeast with their soul mates, the accessible unconscious existential indie glitter popsicle crisis band And The Kids, and hitting the recording studio to work on their next LP.

Long Take:

Sometimes you can find amazing things in the most surprising places. In the wildwood of Western Massachusetts there is a young band playing soulful, rustic Rock and Roll called The Sun Parade.

The Sun Parade began as a collaboration between Chris and Jeff, who met at an early age and whose friendship was cemented by a love of the Beatles, Elliott Smith, Neil Young, and Nirvana. After honing their songwriting together as a duo, they assembled a rhythm section that could match their vision: earthy music with catchy melodies, sweet to hear and undeniable to dance to. Noam used to play with electronic rockers The Mobius Band. Jared plays with the symphony. That’s called “range”.

The Sun Parade will make you feel good. That is their goal. The down-home roots of American folk, the grooves and moves of vintage pop, layered with honest, open songwriting. These boys have taken something old and something new and come away with something wonderful.

Over the last stretch, The Sun Parade have grown a grass fed following in the hills of Massachusetts, bringing together music lovers and good people of all ages to share their song with. Traveling across the country and back in search of listening ears and happy faces, they worked to build a network of fans. They had a regional hit. “Need You by My Side” was the 2011 song of the year on WRSI The River, followed in 2012 by the full length album “Yossis”. In 2014, They recorded and self-released the EP “Heart’s Out”, a catalog of love collisions, casual sandwich obsession; and Northern, psychedelic, basement guitar licks.

Currently they are hard at work, designing power packs that fire music from guns. Kind of like in Ghostbusters, but with music instead of lasers.

These are the likely suspects...

Christopher Marlon Jennings (guitar, lead vocals) is the kind of guy who may disappear from the party without ever saying goodbye. When he shows up an hour later, he's holding a girl and his guitar, and he's used one to write a brilliant song about the other. Born in Northampton, Massachusetts, his voice gruff and bittersweet like that, from day one.

Jeffrey Lewis (lead guitar, vocals) is the kind of guy who doesn't quite look right without some sort of instrument in his hand. I've personally seen him pick up and play with expertise guitars, mandolins, banjos, fiddles, pianos, hurdy-gurdies, and bouzoukis. Jeff came off an island in Maine, where he picked bluegrass mandolin with blur-fingered proficiency; thus: the brother harmonies, the high-speed licks, the lyrics already vintage when they have only recently been pulled from a typewriter. His love of music is second only to his love of fine food and good weed.

Jared Gardner (bass) is the kind of guy who keeps his cards close to the chest. He drove his chrome-fendered, mile-long Crown Vic out of Bakersfield to join the symphony orchestra, and learned to play with what you might call intention. Melodies surfing on waves of rhythms. Nobody knows how he switches so fast from the tux to his threadbare jeans.

Noam Schatz (drums) is the kind of guy who is good with his hands. He exploded with the Mobius Band in a bygone day and has haunted the Valley’s drumsets for years. He wields a craftsman’s approach, ensuring that everything feels like home. Once, twice, play it three times and he’s got it. Otherwise not occupied, he shepherds packs of dogs through the woods while searching for wild mushrooms.
