Cary Fridley & Down South / Bio

Cary Fridley is a southern Appalachian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Born and raised in the Virginia mountains, Cary grew up around good bluegrass and a rich rural culture. She sang in the choir at church and played the banjo as a teenager, later switching to guitar. In 1994 Cary joined the old-time band The Freight Hoppers, and was a strong creative force during their rise to folk festival fame, singing and playing on 2 CD's for Rounder Records. Her powerful old-time guitar rhythm and strong mountain voice made her a favorite in bluegrass and old-time venues throughout the US, Canada, and abroad. Fridley's singing has been compared to Maybelle Carter and Doc Boggs. She retired to Asheville after leaving the band in 1999 to work on solo projects, and took up the bass. Her first solo album, Neighbor Girl is a popular favorite for old-time ballad singers and southern Appalachian music audiences. In 2005, Cary produced Down South, a collaboration with regional artists that represents a wider scope of Cary's influences, branching into blues and electric country. Down South debuted Cary's first original song, Cheatin', which led to an EP of all originals in 2007, Fare You Well. Cary plays bass for regional roots bands around Asheville, and also regional swing and hot club bands, One Leg Up and Vipers Dream. Presently, Cary resides in Asheville, NC, and divides her time between teaching, playing early jazz, and working on her pet project, Cary Fridley and Down South. You can track Cary on Facebook and at Reverbnation.com, her music is available at CD Baby and on Amazon.com.
