Native to Santa Barbara, Jaan was drawn to the piano at age 5 when he met Ed Baum, a local keyboardist from the 80s band Spin Cycle. After learning to improvise Beatles favorites and jazz standards, Jaan began writing his own material as a teenager, accompanied by guitar.
By sixteen, Jaan was performing many of his original songs at Santa Barbara clubs, such as SOHO, as a solo act and front man for various local bands. In high school, he was awarded for his gifted songwriting.
While attending UC Santa Cruz, Jaan continued to write songs as a Creative Writing major, while studying music theory and jazz. He also worked as the Creative Director for “Hip Hop for Mental Health,” an organization that used hip hop to reduce the stigma of mental health challenges.
Meaningful lyrics are Jaan's strong suit. His original music holds a unique color, full of caring, insight, compassion and truth. Jaan released his debut solo album “Tristero” in 2012 (available on iTunes), a compilation of introspective acoustic songs, largely inspired by his work with homeless teens and adults as a street outreach worker in Santa Barbara.
“Sonically, Tristero plays out like an atmospheric folk-rock collection with a slight hip-hop leaning, calling to mind the ballads of Damien Rice, Dispatch, and at times, even a young Chris Martin."

While recording at Gadgetbox Studios in Santa Cruz, CA, Jaan learned the process of producing an album independently. Simultaneously, Jaan worked briefly for a non-profit program called Notes for Notes, where he promoted their free recording studios for youth, learning more about the music industry. Jaan also co-founded a start-up organization called “I am Bullyproof Music,” where he created positive tunes to inspire youth who face bullying.
Jaan released a follow-up EP titled “Change” in April 2014 (available on iTunes), also recorded at Gadgetbox Studios. Largely influenced by '90s grunge and indie rock power trios, Jaan honed a modern electric sound with a studio bassist and drummer, departing from his acoustic roots.
“His clean, clear vocals against the strummed chords fill your ears with the compassion he obviously feels... Yep, it’s that kind of music. Simple, easy, touching, and filled with heart."

In 2014, Jaan played acoustic in local clubs and bars in downtown Santa Barbara, where he settled into his sincere style of live performance. Jaan debuted his first self-recorded/produced album "Soundscapes," followed by "Jaan Landheer and the Storm" (available on Bandcamp), mixing hip hop beats and bass with Jaan’s soulful guitar and vocals.
In 2015 through early 2016, Jaan performed live for “Landheer & the Storm,” a rock duo he founded in Santa Barbara, that blended his laid back vocals, hard-hitting grooves, and heartfelt lyrics. With Influences from '60s classics and '90s Rock, Jaan Landheer and drummer Tim Blutstein created a raw original sound.
After playing various venues in Southern California, “Landheer & the Storm” released their debut EP “Explorations” in early 2016.
Recently, Jaan has returned to performing solo as an acoustic singer-songwriter, continuing to share his personal insights from the heart. Jaan released his latest solo acoustic album, "Closer" in 2016.
