“If you were listening for a sound grouped by the mortar of great musical influences, Amigo would definitely satisfy that craving. They’re based out Rancho Penasquitos, a town bordering the San Diego 15 and 56 freeways. It’s been awhile since I’ve heard a native San Diego band play riffs reminiscent of the Butthole Surfers and Kyuss, which was exactly what pulled me in for this review. On the contrary, Amigo’s vocals are not matched with Gibby Haynes’ lavishly goofy highs and lows. Jeff Podeswic delivers the lyrics in clean form with proper fluctuation. Podeswic also plays lead guitar in this progressive-stoner rock setup and between lyrics his solos are nothing short of speedily. Other members include Anthony Mattos on rhythm guitar, Sufi Karaien on bass, and Anthony Alley on drums. The band was formed in Rancho Penasquitos, and to their hometown’s comical relief, they compose their songs around funny growing pains and personal experiences. I can’t end it there though....”
