“Last Friday's final show of 2013 for Steely Dan tribute band The Blue Deacons at On the Rocks was one of the coolest shows I've caught all year long. Organized by downtown troubadour Chris Carton, ...the result was beyond what I expected. Let's begin with the stellar jazzy lineup: Paul Perez, sax; Mac McClanahan, sax; Michael C. Raney, trumpet; Ron Christian, trombone; Fernando Montoya, flute; Gary Rink, bass; Tyler Evans, guitar; Paul Cierley, guitar; Cesareo Garasa, drums; Daniel Hardy, keys; Candace Evans, vocals; Alisa Spencer, vocals; and Salvador Galindo, vocals and guitar. All assembled by Carton, who led on keys and lead vocals, The Blue Deacons put on a mind-blowing three-set, 30-song show of classics that included the Steely Dan album "Aja," in its entirety. ...the audience could be seen lip-synching along to every lyric. Plenty of wild Steely Dan fan dancing too. Let's hope Carton keeps this great project alive and well for next year.”
"Those lines ring true for Foster Campbell and Friends, Bakersfield's purveyors of "high-octane rhythm and blues." "The group was assembled as a favor to Village Fest organizer Rick Peace, who had approached Campbell about forming a group to perform at the annual beer, wine and food festival. The response to their debut was overwhelming."
"Christmas is coming early for a local band. This Saturday night, Foster Campbell and Friends will be the opening act for the legendary B.B. King when he comes to town and plays at the Fox Theatre." "...the audience has a great time listening to their performance."
"We'll probably do around 25 tunes during the evening, eight of which will be original compositions by my students," Davis said. He has high praise for the composing talents of students Mac McClanahan, Dave Heywood and Cam Weckerley.
