“ILLSPREE - I went to a show this weekend and I saw this artist for the first time: I used to think in a great dancehall track, the riddim, or the baseline specifically, was the dynamic core and every other sound grew and flew from there like ropes whipping by and and that if we listened, we could take hold, jump on and ride. But there’s a core to the core and it’s not made of notes or by any instrument because they too grow and fly off of the actual center. And that actual is invisible and silent, but it breathes and moves and watching Illspree last night I think it devours too. She was so close to the source, like I could see it writhing under her skin. It’s like no one should be so close, like when a scientist says I can create life and you laugh but when he says it again you believe him, and you shudder. Or you don’t react outwardly because we’re better than that by now, so you just watch the creature take its first step and you feel like how I felt watching Illspree.”
