“Tequila Mockingbird Luck And Trouble The album takes the listener through several different types of rock, all done impeccably. The opening track "Blue" recalls the jam band feel of Santana with bluesy guitar riffs. But that vibe ends when the song ends—this album has far more than blues. The heavy "Actual Size" uses grunge-y guitar chords and deep, grumbling vocals from the frontwoman. The album takes a turn to country on "Luck And Trouble," which incorporates skillful slide guitar. Giving the record even more diversity, songs like "La Carta" and "Wrong?" sound like old ska-punk bands like Save Ferris or Bif Naked with horns, guitar distortion, and an upbeat tempo. Luck And Trouble gives the listener an album that showcases a variety of genres. Crossing into several musical styles in the same album is a nice break from bands whose albums consist of slight variations on the same song. Grade: A”

“Tequila Mockingbird took the stage around 11:30, playing a set of solid roots-rock. To watch them play for the first time, you couldn't have guessed frontwoman/singer/songwriter Wendy Clark helped found this band over a decade ago. Her stage presence seemed a bit tentative, humble, even vulnerable at times. Even so, this was an endearing trait more than a distracting one, because it sent a message that this band doesn't take their audience for granted. The songs were well-written and well-played by bandmates who work as a team and seem quite comfortable with one another. The only unfortunate factor was that Tequila Mockingbird's set began rather late--the result of four bands setting up and tearing down completely over the evening. Much of the crowd had dissipated before the headliners started. However, for the loyal ones who stayed on to listen, the band delivered. They've worked hard to earn their following, and it showed Friday night.”

A versatile female vocal fronts this band who didn't just learn their instruments last week. I'd hate to meet "Actual Size" in a dark alley. From the flat evil-sounding vocals to a sinister guitar, this one makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. In a good way. There's a kitchy wah-wah guitar on "Blue" that cranks to screaming as the song progresses and ... wait for it ... a bass solo that doesn't suck. "La Carta" is kind of a ska gone crazy with a horn section that glues it all together. I'm still singing the first line of the chorus "I don't care if you write me a letter." And might I add, I do care that y'all keep making music.”
