About
The History
Vertical Ascent is a rising alternative rock group based out of Jackson, MS, and is composed of four college students who share a deep heartfelt passion for making music that offers hope and inspiration to their audiences.
It started in 2006 with Pedro Luna as the original singer, Chad Perry on lead guitar, Nathan Goss or rhythm, Scottie McCraney on bass, and John Thomas on drums. At this time, all of the members were still in high school. Soon Pedro moved, and the band lost their first lead singer. The mic was passed on to Chad, who would now be playing guitar and singing at the same time. As their sound evolved, they played a numerous amount of shows throughout their local area. In the summer of 2007, they recorded their first 2 demos, "The Breaking of a Will" and "Prisoner." Later that year, they competed in Battle of the Bands at their high school and won first place (by this time they had added Baker Carroll as an additional guitarist).
They continued to grow musically and spiritually as God blessed them with many great opportunities and privileges, one of the greatest being when they were invited to play at AtlantaFest 2008 in Stone Mountain, GA. This huge music festival was headlined by big names in the Christian music industry such as Jeremy Camp, Casting Crowns, Day of Fire, etc. This allowed them a chance to get their name further out there and make themselves better known in the independent music industry.
However, it seemed as if the members were being called in different directions. Later that year Baker, John, and Nathan felt their hearts were leading them elsewhere, and thus they departed from the band, leaving lead vocalist Chad Perry and bassist Scottie McCraney as the two remaining original members. However, the other 3 members have still remained close friends to the band members and continue to support them strongly as they move forward.
Shortly after, Chad met Jeremy Grant, the former lead guitarist of a band called Indifferent to Suffering, who had competed against Vertical Ascent in Battle of the Bands back in '07. Jeremy was already a big fan of VA, and it was quite evident that he shared the same goals and the same heartfelt passion for music that Chad and Scottie had. Seeing that he was a indeed a devoted musician and a phenomenal guitarist, Chad invited him into the VA fam, along with Evan Rodrigo, a close friend of Jeremy's who was also equally passionate about music. Evan became the band's new drummer. After just one rehearsal, they instantly clicked and thus is was confirmed that Vertical Ascent was NOT finished.
