Bio: The history of the largest folk music event in Denmark Tonder Festival (Tønder) goes back to 1974. Since then the festival remained it's intention to provide a platform for both trendsetting, important and legendary folk musicians to meet the Danish (and foreign) audience and local musicians. The Tønder Festival is run 90% by 2000 volunteers (the last 10% being the prof. sound and light crew). The festival consists of 9 very different venues in the small renaissance trading town 7 km north of the German-Danish border. Tønder Festival is known as a very well organized and friendly folk festival. Also it is known for great quality of music and for being a place where the musicians can relax and so transmit that extra energy on stage to the audience. Last weekend in August is simply a highlight for both volunteers, audience and musicians! Who (are playing) and have played the Tønder Festival over the years? Must we mention some over others? Well, among them are The Lone Bellow, John Fullbright, Hayes Carll, The Avett Brothers, Meschiya Lake, Mariza, Pokey LaFarge, Sarah Jarosz, Paul Brady, The Dubliners, and La Bottine Souriante. Also we could mention Pete Seeger, Arlo and Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, Runrig, Emmylou Harris, Flogging Molly, Sinéad O'Connor, Billy Bragg, Mariza, Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle, HudsonTaylor, Darrell Scott, Uncle Tupelo, Hot Rize, The Chieftains, Carlos Nunez, Le Vent du nord, Mads Langer, Lukas Graham, Maria Key, Roy Rogers, The Dillards, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Eddi Reader, Roddy Woomble, Eivor, The Saw Doctors, Christy Moore, Taj Mahal and many hundreds more! You can choose between between nine very different venues in size and look over the four festival days. You can purchase an all day wristband (one day wristbands depending on sales, is planned for sale July/ August) plus a limited amount of ordinary tickets are avail. for the concerts in the Tønder Kulturhus in town. There is a camping area next to the festival site where you can reserve a square/lot of 42 m2 for your camper or tent. There are also small venues for surprise concerts and plenty of opportunity to eat well on the site. THere are three themes areas: 1) NOLA (a small New Orleans/ Louisiana incl. cajun food, voodoo bar, American Coffee bar, two beautiful Spegeltent venues (Art deco, mirrors, wood panels and snugs, round, coloured windows, simply beautiful) and an outdoors front porch stage. 2) Little Dublin - a pub coming close to an Irish pub with lGuinness, Irish whishies, huge sessions, "The Irish Times" (paper) and the posters you'd see in most pubs in Ireland - and of course postcards of the pope. 3) Lille Fanø - go "see, taste, meet the inhabitant,, hear" the Danish isle of Fanø (100 km north of Tønder) very rich in traditions, particularly good for trad. music and dance. Catering in general includes a great variation from fresh smoked local fish and shrimps, gumbo, to whole, roasted lamb, tarte flambé, to old fashioned Danish food to highly prof. gourmet food in restaurants on the site. Also you will find one of the best selections of folk and roots music in the huge music store at the site.
