Show Details: THE LEE BOYS The Lee Boys are one of America’s finest African-American sacred steel ensembles. This family group consists of three brothers, Alvin Lee (guitar), Derrick Lee and Keith Lee (vocals) along with their three nephews, Roosevelt Collier (pedal steel guitar), Alvin Cordy Jr. (7-string bass) and Earl Walker (drums). Each member began making music at the ages of 7 and 8 in the House of God church they attended in Perrine, FL. Here they underwent a rigorous course of training in a variety of musical instruments, including lap and pedal steel guitars. Born and raised in Miami, each of The Lee Boys grew up in the church where their father and grandfather, Rev. Robert E. Lee, was the pastor and a steel player himself. “Sacred steel” is a type of music described as an inspired, unique form of Gospel music with a hard-driving, blues-based beat. The musical genre is rooted in Gospel, but infused with rhythm and blues, jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, country and ideas from other nations. THE BOULDER WEEKLY Presents... Show Details: DRESSY BESSY Denver's ever-so-magnificent Dressy Bessy is all about the guitars, the buzzed-out power-pop chords, the banging rhythm section...and finally, the sweet vocals of Tammy Ealom. Her sly lyrics wrapped around infectious melodies are what drives the band into indie-pop-rock perfection and critical acclaim. Guitarist John Hill is the elder statesman of the group, whose brilliant guitar-work has already helped propel his side-project Apples (in Stereo) to the forefront of the indie scene. Add the extraordinary talent of Darren Albert (drums) and Rob Greene (bass), and you have a rhythm section that complements the sweet melodies. Dressy Bessy is a perennial superstar in their hometown of Denver. In 1999 they released their first LP, Pink Hearts, Yellow Moons, which was highly acclaimed and hailed as, "virtually perfect…by far, the catchiest indie-pop record of 1999" by The Stranger. Continuing their run of purely joyful noise with 2002's full-length Sound Go Round, the band continued to garner amazing press and steady play on college radio. In the spring of 2003, the band presented Little Music, a special collection of early material and rarities. Later in 2003, their self-titled release expanded the band's base into bona fide indie rockstar status. Dressy Bessy's Electrified is their biggest and most audacious effort. It will be released on June 14, 2005. RADIO 1190 LOCAL SHAKEDOWN Presents... DRESSY BESSY with SPECIAL GUEST Doors: 08:30PM Show: 09:00 PM $8 ADV / $12 DOS All Ages

Show Details: BON IVER It wasn't planned. The goal was to hibernate. Justin Vernon moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. Tailing from the swirling breakup of his long time band, he escaped to the property and surrounded himself with simple work, quiet, and space. He lived there alone for three months, filling his days with wood splitting and other chores around the land. This special time slowly began feeding a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. This slowly evolved into days filled with twelve-hour recording blocks, breaking only for trips on the tractor into the pines to saw and haul firewood, or for frozen sunrises high up a deer stand. All of his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt that had been stock piled over the course of the past six years, was suddenly purged into the form of song. The end result is, For Emma, Forever Ago, a nine-song album comprised of what's been dubbed a striking debut by critics and fans alike. Bon Iver (pronounced: bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong on purpose) is a greeting, a celebration and a sentiment. It is a new statement of an artist moving on and establishing the groundwork for a lasting career. For Emma, Forever Ago is the debut of this lineage of songs. As a whole, the record is entirely cohesive throughout and remains centered around a particular aesthetic, prompted by the time and place for which it was recorded. Vernon seems to have tested his boundaries to the utmost, and in doing so has managed to break free form any pre-cursing or finished forms. Show Details: STOCKHOLM SYNDROME When Widespread Panic bass player Dave Schools and acclaimed writer-artist Jerry Joseph of the Jackmormons decided to do something together, each initially figured a joint project would be a cool change of pace. Schools was currently touring with Panic, and although he had done numerous guest appearances and played in several informal side bands, he was eager to sink his teeth into something a bit meatier. Joseph, meanwhile, decided it couldn’t hurt to air out his career-long predilection for what he wryly describes as "religious-sex-junkie-heartbreak songs" in a collaborative scenario with an upbeat guy. The pair began their collaboration casually, as Joseph left his home in Portland, Oregon, to hang out at Schools’ home studio in Athens, Georgia. The two friends had formally worked together just once—when Schools produced the Jackmormons’ 2002 LP Conscious Contact—and found that their disparate sensibilities cohered quite naturally, as Schools’ left-brain approach combined with the right-brain aesthetic of Joseph to create something quite, well, brainy. The next step, they decided, should involve playing together live while simultaneously indulging their mutual love of travel, so they embarked on a shakedown acoustic tour of Europe. Now all Schools and Joseph needed was a band. They came up with a wish list of players one or both of them had worked with in the past. At the top were three names: Eric McFadden (a versatile San Francisco-based guitarist whose extensive resume includes work with Keb Mo’, Primus’ Les Claypool and George Clinton’s P-Funk All Stars), Danny Lewis (Gov’t Mule) and drummer Wally Ingram (an L.A.-based drummer who has worked with Jackson Browne, Sheryl Crow and Tracy Chapman, among others, spending the last few years with the brilliant multi-instrumentalist David Lindley). All three musicians eagerly threw down for the project. THE BOULDER WEEKLY Presents... STOCKHOLM SYNDROME with SPECIAL GUEST Doors: 08:30PM Show: 09:00 PM $22 ADV / $26 DOS 21+

Show Details: THE BLACK KEYS The Akron, Ohio-based duo The Black Keys is well known for its concentrated, hermetic approach to recording, hunkering down with rudimentary equipment in an unfinished basement or commandeering the floor of a vacant local rubber factory to create terse but soulful rock that seems to have time-traveled into the pair's amps from some long-ago radio show. But guitarist-vocalist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney now admit they were ready for a change of scene-as well as some company. So when they got the opportunity to work with Grammy Award-nominated producer-musician-provocateur Danger Mouse, a/k/a Brian Burton (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, The Grey Album), they agreed, for the first time, to leave their familiar environs. Danger Mouse fit right in, too. Says Dan, "He came in as our collaborator. Brian does hip-hop, but he likes rock and roll, obscure 60s psychedelic stuff, and we listen to a lot of that too. So he was pretty easy to get along with. Brian has a real ear for melody and arrangement, and that was a big part of this record, his making suggestions about the arrangements." With Danger Mouse, The Black Keys didn't veer uncomfortably far from the elemental rock & roll territory they'd mined so effectively on previous albums like their 2006 Nonesuch debut, Magic Potion, or their Fat Possum discs, Rubber Factory (2004) and Thickfreakness (2003). But they were definitely in a mood to experiment on Attack and Release. Fri 07/17 Sold Out! THE BLACK KEYS with JERRY JOSEPH AND THE JACKMORMONS Doors: 08:30PM Show: 09:00 PM $25 All Ages Sold Out!

Show Details: BONOBO (LIVE BAND) With the experimental warmth of '60s French films and the pizzicato flavor of horizontal hip-hop, Simon Green's Bonobo project established a welcome niche of a pretension-free, post-party intellectual chill-out. An almost silent figure among Ibizian romanticists, Green began in Brighton, debuting in 1999 with a track on Tru Thoughts Recordings' When Shapes Join Together compilation. Though tempted by offers from Mute and XL after the official issue of "The Scuba EP" and the "Terrapin" single, Green stuck with Tru Thoughts for the acclaimed debut LP Animal Magic. Highlighted by downtempo dub, funk, and an equally likable use of sitars, Animal Magic was an obvious success and plans were quickly made for careful European support appearances, as well as a follow-up album, Dial "M" for Monkey, for Coldcut's Ninja Tune label. A tour to support the record followed and was documented on the 2005 EP Live Sessions. KGNU & RADIO 1190 Present... RED ROCKS AFTER PARTY! Show Details: ARC ANGELS Yet for all the music industry pitfalls to which the group fell victim almost immediately, it's hard to deny the Arc Angels became, as Rolling Stone suggested, "more than just another blues-rock band." In fact, they were the rare supergroup that wound up sounding better than the sum of its parts. For even though their first and only album, 1992's self-titled Geffen release, sold a respectable 380,000 copies and earned them an armful of Austin Music Awards, including Best Band three years running ('92-'94), as well as a pair of Letterman appearances, the real proof of the Arc Angels' posthumous vitality is how fresh the album's four singles sound today; "Living in a Dream," "Sent By Angels," "Shape I'm In," and "Too Many Ways to Fall" are still KLBJ anthems.
