Show Details: Richard Swift - Old Lights - Chaperone Sunday 07/05/2009 9:00 PM |21+|$10.00 ($12.00 Door)|Listen Richard Swift - even to look at him, he positively emanates with a vintage, good-time, entertainer persona. They don't come around often, the ones with that kind of pure showbiz class, which dusts itself off and gets on with the show, and to hell with it all. But Richard Swift (even his name sounds like it was meant to be up in lights) is one in a million. His new album Dressed Up For The Letdown presents his all-round winning combination of talents, whether it is in the studio, at the song-writing coalface, and not least of all onstage, where his sparkling charisma lets you know he's in control. A holy trinity that materialises only so very rarely.

On a personal level, it means rebirth into a greater consciousness. This record was made during a period of personal and artistic transformation and was coaxing for the return of dormant creative energies. The writing of "Before Midnight Scholar" began on a bicycle ride through Southeast Asia, continued on through a four month stay at a spiritual community in the woods of the Hudson River Valley, and ended in the beautiful city of Chicago, Illinois.

Show Details: The Everyday Visuals - Nathan Xander - Olivia Mancini & The Mates Tuesday 07/07/2009 8:00 PM |21+|$0.00 ($7.00 Door)|Listen The Everyday Visuals is a group of five young gentlemen playing rock music with independent spirit. The current line up was formed in the spring of 2006: Christopher Pappas (Vocals, guitar, keyboards) has an irrational fear of being a passenger in a fast moving car and cries every time he hears the Durfle Requiem.Eli Scheer (Guitar, vocals, keyboards) has a family member in every U.S. time zone and likes to meet people with a good story to tell.Joseph Seiders (Drums, vocals, keyboards) should eat more vegetables and panics when he feels his heart beating.Chris Zembower (Moral support, confidant) is a friend.Kyle Fredrickson (Guitar, keyboards) is frequently late and at age 16 hid the first electric guitar he bought from his mother for three months.

Show Details: Adam Fitz Record Release - Death Ships - East Of Edens Soul DJ Express Wednesday 07/08/2009 8:00 PM |21+|$8.00 |Listen Adam Fitz' soulful hollerin' and amped-up pop-rock quartet have been working rooms in Chicago since the 2005 release of Fitz's debut, "Between the Incident and the Event." Singer, folk storyteller, country crunk rocker and melodic screamer, Adam puts every inch of his pain and joy into his music. His voice is powerful and poignant; backed by the Drastics' rhythm section and 'rock scientist' Eddie Dixon, they come manic and hard, slink into steady grooves, and stretch out on melodramatic ballads heavy in themes of family, desire, and loss. Frequenting the windy city's most reputable rooms, such as Schubas and the Hideout, these boys occasionally work as the backing band for Ralph 'Soul' Jackson, and have shared bills with soul legends such as Syl Johnson, Clarence Reid, Sharon Jones (Dap-Kings), Roscoe Robinson, and Herman Hitson.

Show Details: Lost In The Trees - Box Of Baby Birds - Halloween, Alaska Thursday 07/09/2009 9:00 PM |21+|$8.00 ($10.00 Door)|Listen Lost in the Trees is a folk orchestra from Chapel Hill, NC, led by composer/songwriter Ari Picker. All Alone in an Empty House is the anticipated follow up to the critically lauded Time Taunts Me EP, released last year by Trekky Records. The new album shows ringleader Ari Picker fully realizing and extending his compelling synthesis of American folk and traditional classical music and showing that disparate musical styles really stem from a common voice. While Picker certainly utilizes his professional training from the esteemed Berklee College of Music, All Alone In An Empty House is far from the cold calculation and gridded “correctness†some associate with classical music. Rather, it is intensely personal (almost uncomfortably so) and never allows the rules of classical music to limit the emotional weight delivered in each song.

If The Features dont break in the UK, it wont be their fault- this band possesses everything needed to go the distance.Evening Standard 5 stars - Extraordinarily catchy anthemsThe Features are the United Statess answer to the Kaiser Chiefs. The World will soon be coming to them.MOJO 4 stars - Cracking debut from Tennessee pop mavericks. They certainly have an armoury fit to attack the mainstream. An amp-popping live show and a catalogue of songs that at once recall the Pixies and Blurs post Pavement fixation."The Guardian - A dazzling romp through Buzzcocks-like spiky pop and agitated soul reminiscent of the Animals. Powerful and poignant, The Features are difficult to ignore.RockSound - What a ridiculously promising album The Features debut looks set to be. Leave It All Behind is a stomping anthem that should break them into the big time and see them bandied around in conversations about The Killers and Kings of Leon. The Sun - You just know this latest American import can blaze an all-conquering trail over here. There are more hooks than an angling shop.

Show Details: Magnolia Electric Co. The Donkeys - Andy Cohen Saturday 07/11/2009 10:00 PM |21+18+|$14.00 |Listen Quite often, times of dormancy only seem so to those of us on the outside. The wheels never really stop turning. Such is the case for Magnolia Electric Co., which has a string of items lined up over the next months, including its first official release since 2007's Sojourner box set.First for the band is an exclusive 7" titled It's Made Me Cry, which will be available first on April 18 as part of Record Store Day, an international event celebrating independently-owned record stores. Side A of the 7" features a tuplet of songs recorded over a weekend in October 2008 at Bloomington's Russian Recording. The songs serve as a lesson in the power of brevity - each a flaming arrow to the heart of some heavy emotions. Side B of It's Made Me Cry is the moody, instrumental "Protection Spell," recorded at Russian Recordings almost exactly a year prior to the other songs and featuring late bassist Evan Farrell. The band's proceeds from the 7" will benefit The Evan Farrell Memorial Fund.

Show Details: The Duhks - Daphne Willis & Co. Sunday 07/12/2009 8:00 PM |21+|$12.00 ($14.00 Door)|Listen The Winnipeg, Manitoba-based Duhks have always gravitated towards traditional roots-based song structures, but they've never stopped evolving since their inception five years ago. Due in part to a collective musical worldview that knows no boundaries, that evolution led the band to their latest offering Fast-Paced World, the first Duhks record to feature wunderkinds Sarah and Christian Dugas (replacing vocalist Jessee Havey and percussionist Scott Senior respectively). It's an album that reflects the quintet's newfound confidence, with Sarah bringing five original songs to the band's encyclopedic collection of originals and covers both old and new.The French-Canadian born siblings have been immersed in music their whole lives, thanks in part to their musician parents. "We had a family band that toured across Canada when I was 7 and Christian was 9," remembers Sarah. "My father had a recording studio in the house, so I grew up hearing a variety of musicians playing everything from rap to rock to world beat. I grew up in a fun and creative environment ."

Show Details: Micachu & The Shapes - Anni Rossi Monday 07/13/2009 7:00 PM |21+All Ages|$8.00 |Listen Bjork is said to be a fan of Micachu and can probably indentify with another artist brave enough to take pop music into entirely uncharted territory. Micachu is largely inspired by Harry Partch who famously used an array of customised and home made instruments. These included a xylophone made of light bulbs, a ‘Cloud Chamber’ made out of pyrex dishes that could not only be played musically but detect particles of ionizing radiation and a series of highly complicated 44 stringed instruments.Similarly Micachu uses a modified guitar played with a hammer action called a ‘chu’ and a bowed instrument fashioned from a CD rack. She also uses improvised instruments, such as glass bottles or a vacuum cleaner.Instructional video:

Show Details: Jay Brannan - Rachel Zylstra Tuesday 07/14/2009 9:00 PM |21+18+|$15.00 ($18.00 Door)|Listen jay brannan was born under a rock in the coldest part of the himalayas where he was raised by trappist monks who taught him to maintain his body temparature without the necessity of food and clothing through intense meditation and really hard drinking. shortly after his first birthday, he suffered a graphic and painful death to a hungry mountain lion who wasn't so good at meditation and just needed a hearty snack. it wasn't long however before jay's indomitable spirit reappeared in southeast texas to a family who actually wanted a girl. in many ways, they got what they wanted, yet the compromise seemed to be much more controversial than the original disappoinment. after years and years of southern baptist immersion in texas, canada, and oklahoma, jay found himself once again outside houston, TX, continuing in the public school system (quite similar to cattle herding, state prisons, or perhaps even the new york city healthcare system) and a conservative, repressive society infiltrated by a mixture of religion, rebellion, used car lots, and lots of barbecue (the latter being the most repulsive?).
