Show Details: Hot Buttered Rum - The Ragbirds Hot Buttered RumThe RagbirdsIn the short time since Hot Buttered Rum debuted its music, dubbed as a “High Altitude Acoustic Experience,” the band has been praised by fans, peers and national media alike, recognizing Hot Buttered Rum for their ‘stunning instrumental and vocal virtuosity.’ Hot Buttered Rum is attracting a truly multi-generational audience with its ability to create an undeniably hip and fresh sound that weaves together the grounded traditions of folk and bluegrass with the modern influences of rock-n-roll, reggae and acoustic singer/songwriters. Hot Buttered Rum’s musical evolution has not only defined their sound, with their extensive touring schedule, the band has become established as one of the nation’s hottest young touring acts since setting off as a group of friends on a trail in the high sierras in the early part of the decade to emerge as a band, appropriately named, Hot Buttered Rum.Led by the energetic and fiery front woman and songwriter Erin Zindle, who skillfully switches between violin, mandolin, banjo, accordion, and percussion, in addition to singing lead vocals (all while dancing!) The RAGBIRDS musical roots are firmly embedded in the soil of rhythm, ancient and new, incorporating Americana, Gypsy, Celtic, and Latin influences with drums from all over the world, mixing African poly-rhythms and Afro-Cuban tumbao, over sometimes rock, hip-hop or reggae style drum-kit, all designed to get people both listening and up and dancing! In live performances the band incorporates variations on traditional African drum pieces, each member trading their instrument for a nearby hand drums. The band has a strong belief in the lyricism of poetry and positive music, and the power of dance-able rhythm.

Show Details: Aaron Williams - Royal Pines - Baxter (from deepfield) Aaron WilliamsRoyal PinesBaxter (from deepfield) Joe Patt’s drumming and his eerie, demented lyrics played a big part in shaping the ragged, rootsy punk that came to define Columbus, Ohio’s underground in the 90’s, first with The Hairy Patt Band and then with Them Wranch. Patt moved to Chicago in 2002 and spent that summer as The Country Teasers’ touring drummer. Several tunes from their Hideout performance, including a magnificent cover of Blue Monday by New order, were included in a 2005 live album released on In The Red records. After the Country Teasers stint he went on to play drums with Cash Audio’s John Humphrey in The Night Callers and with Billy Catfish in The Lonesome Tumblers. It was in The Lonesome Tumblers that he met Royal Pines’ lead guitarist, Brian Harper (Tekulvi, Notary). He then met Royal Pines’ bassist, Brendan O’Mara, through his old Them Wranch mate, Todd Pannent. Pannent and O’Mara played together in The Tax and Fertile Minds. Pannent encouraged Patt to step out front with a guitar and perform some of the tunes he’d been stockpiling. Pannent was the original Royal Pines’ drummer when the group formed in the summer of 2005. In late 2006 he left and was replaced by Joe Gerdeman, a veteran himself of the Columbus scene. After playing only a handful of shows the band repaired to The Butcher Shop to record in the summer of 2007. Those recordings comprise the album Old World which is being released in August on Ohio’s She He It label. The Royal Pines have been refining their dark-hued, haunting, and uneasy sound for these last couple of years and on “Old World “ it culminates in a complex brew steeped in psychedelia, post-punk, and country....DEEPFIELD is a four-piece rock band from SC, supporting their debut album(produced by grammy award winners Paul Ebersold and Skidd Mills)...in stores NOW on Indegoot/Fontana/Universal...."deepfield represents 2007’s new eclecticism, soaking up inspiration from a widely disparate list of sources to create an individualistic sound that’s perfectly uncategorizable." -Carol Kaye /KayosProductions.... "deepfield excels when it guts songs, as if it thrives ..ing from scratch. Whether the (battle) scars of life are real or not, deepfield wears them like a cool arm band." -Otis Taylor/The State

Show Details: The Gorilla Press - The Johns - Elsinore The Gorilla PressThe JohnsElsinoreTHE GORILLA PRESS is a Chicago, IL alternative/experimental/post-rock band that has been compared to such artists as Radiohead, Mogwai, Elliott Smith, and Jeff Buckley. The four-piece is comprised of drummer Josh Rockel, keyboardist Brian Pavloff, bassist Marc Najjar, and singer/songwriter/guitarist Chris Kang, with vocalist Britni Day appearing on their first release. The group came together one piece at a time in Chicago, where each member arrived from their respective hometowns to study music; Marc from Louisville, KY, Brian from Philadelphia, PA, Chris from Richmond, VA, and Josh from the west Chicago neighborhoods. Though from very different musical backgrounds, roommates Chris and Marc quickly found common ground in post- and progressive-rock bands such as Radiohead and Mogwai; what began as casual collaboration became an involved project as the two members’ friendship solidified. After cycling in several prospective bandmates, the addition of heavy-hitting young punk rock drummer Josh and the classically-trained but Zappa-inspired keyboardist Brian completed the lineup in the summer of 2007.Able to communicate on an unusually precise level thanks to each member’s extensive musical training background, yet holding closely to the swerving and clanging ethos of brooding, angular guitar rock and songwriting, the group quickly assembled enough material for their first album. This was recorded with Shiraz Dada of Maps and Atlases and mastered with Dan Wagner of Sequoia and released independently.THE JOHNS is the latest project for Chicago producer/composer Jon Scarpelli. Following the dissolution of the high energy rock group VESSEL, Jon focused his musical talents on producing records for other talented Chicago bands, and writing songs for his upcoming solo album. Along with producing and engineering their albums, jon is also featured playing various instruments with Push, Farkus, Alexander Sands, The Saturn Project, and The Red Line District. With his solo debut at a Caribou Coffee in late 2005, Jon realized it was finally time to start pursuing the vision of years of home studio recordings and demos. Though resistant to be a salesman, Jon set out to quietly introduce his music and message to friends and small crowds all over Chicago. Playing small venues like The Store, Silvies, The Bird's Nest, Lilly's, and Gallery Cabaret Jon developed a multifaceted approach to the solo guitar/vocal shtick. From touching folk songs about the heartbreaking irony of love and the human condition, to old favorites like Roxanne, to comedic impromptu sing-a-longs about anything and everything. Jon has cultivated a musical personality that is inviting, intimate and moving. In 2006 Wanting to move closer towards the initial vision of the songs and meet the full realizations of the demos and EP's, Jon enlisted the help of his former VESSEL bandmates lifelong friend Tim Smyth and his brother Mat Scarpelli. Mark Carlson was quickly asked to play drums, and they called themselves "The Johns". Following the release of "The Johns E.P." in 2007 the band has pleased crowds with a series of packed shows at well known Chicago venue's like The Elbo Room and Wise Fool's Pub.The band name is about anonymity and doesn't have anything specifically to do with the singer (note the different spellings). The Johns aim to proceed as an undefinable sort of pop music. The music is sometimes bittersweet and filled with the kind of melancholy that is healthy. Othertimes it's just powerful.ELSINORE is a band in transition. After spending 3 years playing Americana/Folk music with an acoustic guitar, hand drums, and an easy-listening state of mind, the band decided to turn up knobs and land comfortably in the Indie Rock world. Influenced by Radiohead, Wilco, Spoon, and Arcade Fire...heavy riffs, foot-tapping choruses, and tasteful pop hooks fill in the holes from their Americana deconstruction. They're on track to release a brand new album this Fall recorded close to home in central Illinois. The band is finally ready for more miles in the van, more shows, and more sleeping on couches.

Show Details: Alive Day - Grammar - Majesty Alive DayGrammarMajestyA scene out of our lives…if you lived it, you'll sing along. Alive Day continues in the spirit of modern rock and delivers a blend of finesse and energy never ignoring possibilities. Drummer Matt Bauman, guitarist Tony Piscotti, bassist Kathy Green, and singer-songwriter Dan Arrecis are currently putting the final touches their first full-length debut release Blindsided By Hope at B-Side Audio recording studio in Chicago's Ukrainian Village. The record delivers on promises of familiar songs you've never heard before…and definitely will not soon forget. In addition, the band has positioned itself for performances throughout their native Chicagoland, solidifying a live act that takes the songs even further. Strongly influenced by a variety of 70's singer-songwriters including Gram Parsons and David Bowie as well as current day rocker-songsmiths like Butch Walker and Ryan Adams, Alive Day's music continues to embrace their past but with a vision that is as boundless as the stories they tell.Brent Pulse met Lizz Kannenberg on a late-night Chicago el train, after Lizz nodded off and Brent tried to steal her worn copy of Franny and Zooey. A heated debate about who does a better karaoke version of David Bowie's "Queen Bitch" ensued, and a fast friendship was born. The unlikely pair got off the el train that night and threw records around a studio apartment for three days, discovering that they share a not-so-secret love of "acoustic pussy music," a mutual fear of most kinds of cheese, and genealogy – they're first cousins, the offspring of twin mothers who were separated at birth. This auspicious beginning is just about the only bond that could bring their musical backgrounds (Him: funk, soul, and hip hop; Her: post-punk, garage, and Brit pop) together in one project, and the result is the glam-rock-on-cough-syrup pop of Grammar. Built around Brent's lovely melodies and introspective lyrics and Lizz's propensity to deconstruct them, Grammar became its own quirky brand of bright indie pop, and Brent and Lizz began the search for additional musicians to help shape the sound of Grammar. It wasn't long before they found drummer Jon Sarmiento playing overturned buckets outside of a Red Line el stop and convinced him to leave his promising side career with the Jesse White Tumblers. The band was finally completed when the monocled professor of acoustics and atmosphere, P. Griffin Baron, left academia to torture the electric guitar in Grammar.MAJESTY:There’s a popped-out punk sound in Chicago that’s so good it deserves to be dressed up. There are five men who have embraced the inevitable decadence of their collective destiny and decided that their music deserves a new pair of shoes. The wear and tear of subterranean, late-nite customer satisfaction has scuffed this band down to an indelible slickback shine. So don’t hate them because they’re brilliant: they only want to light up your night. Behold your Majesty.Majesty means grandeur without gimmicks. The band-members work together to make an edgy and lean sound. Leadsinger/songwriter Jim Fountalas is still the undisputed king of crowd appreciation, holding the project locked on good product with his honest charm and priceless dedication. The band now has a library of over 20 songs stemming from a pair of demos and sessions with Sean O’Keefe (Motion City Soundtrack, Knockout, Spitalfield and Fallout Boy) at Gravity Studios.

Show Details: Strange Arrangement - My Dear Disco - JOBU Strange ArrangementMy Dear DiscoJOBUSTRANGE ARRANGEMENT, a Chicago based Quartet, is a band combining a wide array of musical styles, from jazz to rock; raggae and funk to bluegrass; as well as Afro-Cuban and West African Music. Their high energy performances bring a fresh sound to the stage and always draw people in to experience something different. They have been reaching new audiences across the Midwest, playing venues in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. In January 2008, they released their debut record, Side by Side, which combines their unique musical landscapes into tightly knit, well-crafted songs that somehow go from Folky/Indy to Progressive Funk Fusion, meeting in the middle somewhere to create a new path.MY DEAR DISCO"...at once a psychedelic exercise and a grasp at the Top 40." - CD Reviews.com"Brains and Booty" - The Ann Arbor News "...traversing musical territory thus far unexplored" - The Michigan Daily"An otherworldly sound that keeps the crowd moving and watching to see what will happen next . . . . lifting you into uncharted musical territory." - The Record"Melodic but challenging, driving yet textural, relentlessly grooving... an acoustical and technological mixer party: there's a bumping club above, a lounge below, and a smokey jazz bar in between." - Dave Schall, DSA Studios "Dangerously Addictive" - Geoff Michaels, Big Sky Studios "...one of the new 'IT' bands of Ann Arbor..." - Real Detroit WeeklyJOBU was born in October of 2005 at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale Il. They first began by blending their love for guitar driven music. As friends and a fan base began to assemble, JoBu decided they would give something back to the fans; rhythmic beats that move bodies towards the dance floor. The band decided that they needed to incorporate more vocals, catchy melodies and encompassing grooves that would really hit home with the audience. During the next two years, JoBu managed to gain an outstanding reputation as a local artist, selling out venues all over Carbondale, and making a move all around the mid-west. The summer of 2007 the band gained acceptance in the Summer Camp Music Festival in Chillicothe, IL. One day Matt Hines received a call from good friend and phenomenal drummer Evan Ryan. Evan had always been a friend of Matt’s since high school, but had been busy studying Jazz and Classical Performance at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University in the city. Evan decided to come to Carbondale to fill the gap in JoBu’s musical soul. Since his arrival, JoBu has astonished fans with their intense musical ability, songwriting knowledge and crazy showmanship. JoBu is happy to announce the arrival of their first professional studio album “Stop Time”
