album review by Freddy Celis of Rootstime Radio.

T.Mac. "Schmucksville"

8th. March. 2008.

T. Mac. a pseudonym for Terence McCartney, is an artist who can truly be called independant!! He literally does everything himself on his album "Schmucksville".Apart from the small matter of actually creating and writing the songs, he does his own producing, plays all of the instruments, and sings all of the vocal parts!! he even came up with the cover for the album!! "All very commendable but what does it sound like?" I hear you ask, well here goes!!
"Schmucksville"is a magical travel in a landscape of rhythms and poetry, which are more lyrical compositions of tales that he wants to tell us with his songs, sometimes with acoustic guitar accompaniment and generally with electric guitar. T.Mac. tries to draw the attention of the listener and demand their admiration for the quality and depth in his compositions, which I personally believe he succeeds in doing so. However he has not always been a solo artist because he was for several years a musician and vocalist in various line ups, but he decided (according to his web page) "to give up playing live to concentrate on my own material", so that is how the "Schmucksville"album came about, recorded on a private studio in his home where he works on his compositions. A new cd of his work will be appearring soon on an album called "Tattletale wind". In his lyrics and music, he is especially influenced by the music of The Eagles, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty and more recent Coldplay, and the subjects of his songs vary from his own life experiences concerning observations, perceptions of events in history, and tales originated purely from his imagination. The cd starts with electronics and wonderful bluesy guitar in the style of Robert Cray with the song Breaking Hearts And Telling Lies more of the same style, electronics and tight guitar with the next two tracks Plastic Glory & Rocky Road Modern melodious songs is the trademark of T. Mac.which become very clear from the instrumental Georgia`s Ballet with guitar playing in the style MarkKnopfler, this track would not be out of place as part of the soundtrack for the film Bilitis Looking For An Answer & Rough Cut Diamond come next and sound like the kind of tracks you would have heard from bands in the late eighties and early nineties. Fortunately T. Mac.changes his gun shoulder for the tasteful Fools Gold and his theatrical Schmuck City extremely decisive pieces of work. Last but not least, No Tears Will Fall a rag piano based track, of a story about a murderer on death row!! totally different to any other composition on the album but still somehow works. So, there you have it "Schmucksville" personally I enjoyed listening to the album, it`s very hard to comprehend that this is all done within the confines of someone`s home!! but please, assess for yourselves.
