About

Even if you haven't grown up surrounded by it, you recognize the sound. Island Reggae music has come a long way since its beginnings in the late '80s and early '90s.  Its fusing of contemporary Hawaiian singing style and instrumentation of Jamaican reggae rhythms,  Island Reggae music has become the sound of three Honolulu radio stations and Hawaii's most profitable music scene.

As a hot contributor of Hawaiian Reggae music, Three Plus is currently one of Hawaii's very own favorite bands.  Taking the Hawaiian islands by storm since 1999, Three Plus continues to spin in high rotation with the local stations in Hawaii, Japan, Guam, and the U.K.  They are a highly energetic group that consist of men that have come together through their love of sports and solidified with the love of music.

During their reign in the Hawaii music scene, Three Plus recorded their first album entitled "Honey Baby."   Their project hit the shelves in September of "99 and after one week of the release, the album topped the local charts. Their first released song "Don't Have To Think Twice" went on to set its mark on the National Billboard Charts for 13 weeks at various positions.  For nine straight weeks, 'Honey Baby' was number one on Hawaii's FM 100's top 10 at 10 during their units sold locally.  Nine months after releasing, they have already sold more than 70,000 copies. Within the year of '99, Three Plus set local record sales by selling well over approximately 80,000 copies in the music market.

Although their front men are BIG size, hence the band's namesake, It is no coincidence that Three Plus were chosen to be the only local opening act for Janet Jackson - 'All For You' 2002 Tour live on HBO at Hawaii's Aloha Stadium. Three plus has also made various touring appearances with "Reggae Icons" Third World, Maxi Priest, Shaggy, Inner Circle, Messenjah, and the all so popular Morgan Herritage Band. As noted by Three Plus' manager/drummer/producer Shawn Pimental, the group was there at the right place and at the right time.

Soon following thereafter, Three Plus released their second full-length album, title "3+4U" (For You).  With this second project, Three Plus was on the verge of another island music success.   Like the first album, "For You" is easygoing enough for listeners of all ages and catchy enough to spark demand.  With enough recognition, Three Plus was nominated for three Na Hoku Hanohano awards, equivalent to a Grammy, which the award is a very prestigious honor in Hawaiian music industry.  In 2003, Three Plus captured gold by winning Na Hoku Hanohano award for "Reggae Album of the Year."

'For You" has 10 songs, including three covers: The Stylistics' classic "Betcha By Golly Wow," Bob Marley's "Is This Love" and Jimmy Cliff's "Roots Woman."  Though their covers is the plight of Island Reggae music, Three Plus has chosen quality covers that have not yet been played out.   More importantly, they add enough ingenuity to make their versions of the first two covers more their own.  Inclusion to their cover songs, other singles such as, "Undercover Lover,"  "I'd Love to Love You,"  "Do What Lovers Do", and the title track "For You" are typical Island Reggae pop flares with enough catchy hooks that is a sure hit with island locals, Continental US, and International Fans.  The world of Island Reggae music couldn't have chosen a better representative than the men of  Three Plus to make a name outside of the islands.

With their soulful melody of their front man Tanoa Kapana and sic hooks of their ukelele / keyboard player Marcus Malepeai, this successful group consists of an impressive back line of keyboard player Kahi Fernandez, bass player Cary Mashiba, and Producer/Musical Director Shawn Pimental on drums, they assure to enhance an exciting, high energy show.  Three Plus is currently in studio, working on their third project "Love Is The Solution" that captures their unique and very characteristic sound of Island Reggae and a little R&B flare.  In the short time that this band has originated, they definitely have made their mark in music history and will continue to move forward.
