The Refusers / Press

"The Refusers write, record, and perform songs bristling with the sort of passion you don’t find much of in modern music. They are engaged with their world and the nine songs on their new album promise to be gripping additions to their live set; in fact, they seem geared for that purpose alone."

"Nine parts rock and roll—one part punk. A controlled burn. Rage on a tap. The Refusers third studio album, Disobey, bitches and moans for the sake of the people, but does it with tasteful musical chops."

"It’s becoming increasingly clear The Refusers can lay claim to being one of the best indie rock bands working today."

"There’s enough of a mix in styles on the album to make Disobey one of the finest rock albums you’ll hear in 2018"

““The Refusers are one of the best indie rock bands plying their trade today””

“Are ya longing for the days of the Fugs, the MC5, and then a hell of a lot more? Well, Bunky, ya gots it right here in this holds-no-punches 15-cut orgy of blood, spite, venom, bile, spleen, and other intoxicatingly keen pleasures charging WAY too far into truth-telling territories to ever be accepted by the “Left” or the Right, the two being nowadays almost identical, especially in view of the MadMan/MadWoman scenario playing out in the residency-run by sibling reptiles Clinton and Trump. As the asylum looks on we now have the soundtrack.”

“This bunch will wake you up harder than any Occupy stuff did and make you think a little harder than the usual Internet click bait that passes for analysis. Hey kids, once upon a time people really did want messages in their music. Give it a try, this is no wank paid for with daddy’s money.”

“Title track, ‘Wake Up America’ and ‘Hang the Bankers’ echo a more political Alice Cooper. It’s good to hear songs with meaning by a rock ‘n’ roll band. The Refusers refuse to be dumbed down and we are very glad about that. A refreshing release.”

“To sum up The Refusers Born To Rock EP, I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of freedom of speech, kick ass Rock n Roll with intelligent lyrics. An excellent lesson in sociology and politics that anyone can understand. I’m sure this EP will be on rotation for a long time yet on my playlist.”

“The Refusers tap into the rebellious spirit of rock n’ roll on “Born To Rock”. Chaotic and compelling the Refusers know how to create thoughtful highly intelligent pieces of infectious pop. Lyrically the songs focus on the disenfranchised. By opting for this style they balance elements of rock alongside economic equality. Employing a classic sound the songs feel positively timeless, with attention to flourishes of sound helping to keep the song deeply felt.”

“With Born to Rock, The Refusers are tapping into that certain something and sounding the alarm on political, social and economic injustice in the hopes of helping people realize that they do not have to just accept everything that is fed to them. If you embrace fighting against “The Man” and long for a revolution reminiscent of the days of Woodstock and Bob Dylan protest songs, Born to Rock and The Refusers are exactly who you’ve been looking for.”

“Born To Rock starts with an expansive rock sound that takes up hints of Neil Young, Rush, and Genesis. Intense guitar work during this opening track opens up into an epic track in Wake Up America. The narrative that is created on this effort is delectable, telling listeners more over the course of 270 seconds that many bands can do over the course of a full-length album. Bits of Pink Floyd and Dire Straits can be discerned here. The different sections of this track seem to be separate from one another, but the talent exhibited by the band members are more than enough to make the resulting effort comprehensive as all get out.”

“In comes THE REFUSERS fronted by former Wall Street wizard-turned-whistleblower on American greed MICHAEL BELKIN with a punchy, guitar-driven punk rock sound that calls out the crooks and calls for the heads of the infidels and two-bit bandits who call themselves bankers. Does the song HANG THE BANKERS need any explanation? In an age where music moves products in order to move units we've gotta give it up for THE REFUSERS whose heart and balls are in the right place. BORN TO ROCK indeed.”
