What happens when I cause such pain

Take, for example, my average weekday riddle:
The bookends are clear, but I can’t recall the middle

Well it usually begins
With the company of good friends
In front of a mason jar
But I wind up in a police car

And everything in between is a fog
I start out a cool cat and I wind up a dog
Calamity’s caused when I wag my tongue

I don’t need to know what was said
But I’m sure I deserve my nose bled
And that is why I don’t ask what went wrong.

I hate to be that guy
‘Cause I’m usually quite shy
But my aptitude to think
Flies out the door when I have a drink

And commence to make a little joke
That comes out foul when my filter’s broke
And innocently assume it’s all in fun.

I’ve learned to accept that the fault is mine
When things turn bad and the fists start to fly
And that is why I don’t ask what went wrong.
