There is Ray Davies whimsical character study songs in which he depicted fictional personalities cast in situations of black humour. Davies characters were intrinsically English and always imaginary. Then there is Michael Stumm who takes a different approach as he writes about real people. With production credits for Scott Sherratt and actor Willem Dafoe The musicianship and song writing is of a very high standard and this is real heartfelt art. The country tinged backing band is complimentary to Stumms leathery drawl which is as compelling as it reminiscent of Lou Reeds manner and the more animated Bob Dylan vocal periods. That is part of the experience of this record yet it is not vital as the music speaks volumes itself.
There is no standard subject songs here, its as off-centre a record as your likely to find.
If you like your music a little different lyrically then this is for you.

A Folk Rock Badass with Old Hollywood Charm
By Ebony March
Attention ladies and gents: Michael Stumm has arrived. After years spent immersed in the punk-infused art and music scenes of New York City, he has situated himself among the sunny shores of Los Angeles.
This singer-songwriter is a unique blend of old Hollywood charm and rockabilly swagger. His sound marries the folk music earnestness of all the early Bob Dylan recordings with the renegade detachment of Lou Reed.
Even Academy Award-nominated actor Willem Dafoe gets his own tune. And rightly so, considering he's the record's producer.
"I've played music most of my life," he confesses, "and I've never had any interest in it as a 'career.'"
