This is a page for the Java Mammas open mic in Reisterstown, MD. We happen every Thursday at Java Mammas (324 Main St., Reisterstown, MD, 21136). Sign up starts at 6pm and music runs from 7-10pm. rob of the band ilyAIMY is your host (c'est moi!).  I’m about to lay out some open mic rules, regulations, thoughts, things and STUFF. It may sound extreme! It may make it sound… not fun… I assure you, this IS for fun. That actually should be the first rule.

1) Have fun. Or else.

2) Sign up.
  a. Sign up starts at 6pm. No earlier! You can call the venue (410.833.8100) or call or text me (301.910.2575) or preferably sign up in person.

  b. On the signup sheet – we’re recording the night but in order for me to do anything with the recordings I need to have your permission to use them. If you check the little “I can has recording” box, we’ll archive your set and make it available to you online. It might also be chosen to represent the Java Mammas open mic here on our webpage or on their myspace and might even make it onto the Java Mammas compilation CD. However, if you DON’T check the box, we’ll delete the recording so’s it don’t become an unwelcome bootleg. If you allow us to keep your recording, please leave your email address so we can contact you about it!

  c. The numbers on the list are the order, not guaranteed time slots. If you are slot number 6 and no one signs up for 1-5, you’re number 1!

3) About Java Mammas.
  a. We need to make sure people can get in and out of the coffeehouse. Please don’t block exits or the path up to the register – it’s a tight space, please be aware of your surroundings.

  b. Please support the venue.  Buy food and drinks!  Tip your server!

4) About the playing and the noise you make and stuff.
  a. First off, be aware that Java Mammas is a family-friendly, Christian-owned coffeehouse. This doesn’t necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs or leanings of the host, performers, or even the audience – but we are the guests of the establishment and we play by their rules. There’s no discussion about this. It’s not about free speech, not about censorship and not about me being just a mean old host – it’s about respecting the venue and what they’ve asked for as well as respecting the rest of the clientele. If I tell you you’ve gone too far, don’t question it. Either don’t repeat your faux pas or leave. Check out openmikes.org and find something else to do on a Thursday night. Repeat offenders will not simply be “not invited back” but will not be ALLOWED back. If you’re not sure about the appropriateness of a piece, ask me ahead of time.

  b. 2 pieces / 10 minutes. This is the rule of thumb for performances and is used to guesstimate the times for the night (i.e. slot 7 should be approximate an hour after slot 1). There’s a little bit of time for set up, take down, me introducing people, babbling, etc – but please be aware that time is tight. This especially effects people who have a lot of gear to set up. On the same note (no pun intended) be in TUNE for your set. No one wants to listen to you tuning your guitar. The host has a tuner, feel free to ask for it.

  c. Be aware of when your slot is. I’m not going to come hunt you down. I’ll announce who’s up and who’s up next, but if you’re not there for your slot, I’ll skip you. If we have time for you at the end of the night, awesome. If not, come back next week.

 d. Java Mammas is NOT a “listening room”. Though we might hush people during poetry sets or if the audience gets particularly raucous, generally it’s up to the performer to entrance the peeps in the room.

5) About being a feature.
  a. I’ll be booking a weekly feature act. They’re going to be awesome, because I’ll be booking them and I have exquisite taste. This is a 20-30 minute set in the middle of the open mic.

  b. Feel free to approach me about getting a featured set. I may or may not say yes!

Thanks for helping make the Java Mammas Open Mic the exquisite night that it’s become. We welcome new-comers and regulars alike and I’m stunned by how successful the night has been. Switching formats to the longer Thursday nights has thrown things a little bit, but I think more of a good thing is… well… more good.
