Bio

That sound has been called a "jambalaya" by press and "country fried jam" by fans alike. Take it from the name, The Hipnecks, which combines the words "Hippie" and "Redneck" as affectionately as it unites trucker hats and flip-flops. Within that sentiment lays their genre-bending approach to making music. Music that is, in every way, firmly rooted beneath their feet in the fertile ground of the American Midwest near the Ozark Mountains.

Combining elements of Midwest rock, Blues, Texas Rock, Jazz, Funk, and even Bluegrass, the five members of The HipNecks have conjured a sound all their own," The Vox, Magazine. That sound has been called a "jambalaya" by press and "country fried jam" by fans alike. Take it from the name, The HipNecks, which combines the words "Hippie" and "Redneck" as affectionally as it unites trucker hats and flip-flops.

Incorporating catchy vocal harmonies, acoustic rhythm guitars, acoustic and electric lead guitars, harmonica, mandolin, bass guitar, drums, hand percussion, piano, organ, and sax; their music must speak for itself. As musical genres and the groups they encompass become increasingly segregated, The HipNecks' crossover approach has become equally diverse. They like a wide variety of genres, and they all write music. It shows. Over the past several years, this "jambalaya" has simmered into a cohesive style that's American like only a mutt can be.

The HipNecks' first show was a battle of the bands at Lake Ozark, MO. They won that 2003 competition, under the assumed name the Farmhouse and many more after that before ultimately turning completely away from the competition scene. Of the last few, one deemed them National Champions after slugging it out with over 126 bands from all over the country in the sweltering August heat at Camp Zoe, the home of Schwagstock. All the while, they maintained a hammering schedule of bar gigs that eventual built them an enormous local following of friends and fans.

The HipNecks released their debut album, Just Another Fine Day, in April of 2005. The album included catchy tunes composed in and about the thick their college dive bar atmosphere. From the sing-a-long songs like Bartender and Fairytale to the rip-roaring Maria and Takin' Out the Trash, the grit of Outsider to the softer Let Go and King of the Week, Just Another Fine Day offers a little of everything to the audible pallet of listeners. "Looking back, it's funny how hastily we released that album. Then, all we wanted was a clean copy of what we sounded like live at the time, and that's exactly what we got. I remember Maria was done in one take. That was it. So many new ideas developed for these songs after we got a chance to actually hear them. Perhaps one day we'll rerecord some of those tunes now that they've matured. The songwriting was definitely there. We just have too many songs we want to record now."

The songs on this album represent an Ode to their much appreciated army of fans who propelled them from the cramped smoky bars in the college town of Fulton. Columbia, MO saw this first hand when The HipNecks managed to secure a night at the famed Columbia venue, The Blue Note, for their CD release party. Legions of fans marched from all over the Midwest, packed the house, and ultimately broke album sales records for a local act at the venue on a Tuesday night. "Who are these guys and where did all these people come from?" was a question asked numerous times by locals and staff who deemed it, "One of the best CD releases we've ever had for a local band." That was The HipNecks' first show in Columbia, MO and they were the only band on the bill. Over 400 copies of Just Another Fine Day were sold that night and an additional 1,500 were kicked down the street over the next year. During that time, fans spread into neighboring cities and states, were fruitful, and multiplied leading to a similar effect at venues in Kansas City and St. Louis. The first show in Kansas City came 12 people shy of selling out. "We were simply amazed." The HipNecks are, indeed, a band to be characterized by the power of their fans, as well as the quality of their songwriting.

They average around 50 shows a year as a band. Anderson and Kay stay busy during the week an on off nights teaming up with fellow musician Sean Canan (Bockman's Euphio, Joe Stickley's Blueprint) playing rowdy 'partygrass' acoustic shows in their side project, The Hatrick, at local bars and restaurants. "It keeps the cobwebs out and puts us constantly in the view of area good-timers. We're recruiting fans and paying the bills."

Since the release of Just Another Fine Day, The HipNecks have received significant airtime on area radio stations and played many regional festivals including Columbia's 9th Street Summerfest opening for Little Feat, Hermann, MO's infamous Oktoberfest, Garagestock, Dogstock, and the Euphio Campout just to name a few. Their reach extends firmly from Iowa to Arkansas, and St. Louis to Colorado, where they have completed two successful tours. There wasn't physical space for another body in the venue the last night of either tour. The HipNecks' sophomore album, American Night, is scheduled to release April 10, 2008 followed by a strong string if release shows all over the area. Look for some more intensive touring this summer!
