“Even if "Music High" is a story, real life ---- and genuine local music ---- is everywhere in the film. "Music High," screening at 10:05 a.m. Friday as part of the Oceanside International Film Festival, is based on the Punk Rock High School music club at El Camino High, a club of talented and diverse musicians who merged interests in different genres into a common goal of networking, learning and performance. Tom Voris, a teacher at the school, is club adviser, and is also the founder of the acclaimed local ska band the Fabulous Rudies, entertaining listeners worldwide for more than 15 years. "The idea for the film started a few years ago, when we talked about making a documentary," Voris said. "Nothing came of it, but we liked the idea of making a movie." Voris began working with San Diego filmmaker Mark Maine on the concept, and the result is "Music High," premiering this week, with hopes for a much wider release, and an accompanying CD expected to gain traction. “If you had to guess which San Diego band has played more Warped Tours, you would be wrong if you guessed Pepper (three times) or Unwritten Law (four). That honor would be split between New Found Glory and the Fabulous Rudies. Each band has played five Warped Tours. On August 17, Voris will have another distinction. That’s the day of the world premiere of Music High, a film he inspired. And as the movie’s music coordinator, he selected the 15 titles on the soundtrack. Voris teaches history at El Camino High in Oceanside. Faced with massive cuts to music education, Voris, who has played in the Rudies for 15 years, wanted to find a way to keep music alive in high school. At the after-school club, students would jam together and talk about getting ahead in the music business. Maine describes Music High: “It’s about a teacher who loses his funding and who gets to teach just one music class. He deals with five different bands in that class — pop, country, heavy metal, goth, and”

“Forget about "High School Musical" -- some students and a teacher at El Camino High School are working on an edgier soundtrack that they say more realistically reflects the high school experience. For the last six months, about 15 students at the school have met for lunch once a week to talk about rock 'n' roll as part of a new Rock Band Music Club. What started out as a club to learn more about the industry has blossomed into a musical network that organizes concerts and is creating a compilation CD intended to someday be a soundtrack for a proposed movie titled "Punk Rock High School."”

“Punk Rock High School “The script was written based on the high school scene in coastal North County San Diego,” says Fabulous Rudies singer Tom Voris, music director for the upcoming film Punk Rock High School. “It’s based on reality and completely different from, say, Disney’s High School Musical.” “Most of the bands are connected with the Rock Band Music Club at El Camino High,” says Voris, who teaches economics and history at the Oceanside school. Current and former students on the soundtrack include Midnight Rose, Without Warning, Durty White Chucks, Inberst, Rootsicali, One Way Flight, Irieside, and Tan Sister Radio. The CD graphics were designed by El Camino senior Michael Rafalik, with mastering by A-list producer Stephen Marsh (Black Eyed Peas, Incubus, Neil Diamond). Voris’s 14-year-old daughter sings on one track.”

“The FABulous Rudies have filled my eardrums with the sweet nectar of alternative rock music on the band's latest EP, JUST A GIRL. The six piece band is fronted by a female lead vocal, that is full of energy and youth, making the Oceanside band a force to be reckoned with among today's bands.”

"Rock 'n' Roll marathon: What you need to know" There will be more than 50 bands along the course, including the Bayou Brothers, Mad Traffic, the Fabulous Rudies, Todo Mundo, Tomcat and the Blues Dusters. The headlining performer is the surf singer/songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter. He performs around 10:30 a.m. at the finish line.

“On the Rock and Roll Marathon, San Diego - Whether you love to walk, run, or simply marvel at the scenic route to the finish line, the event has a variety of features including live bands lining the course, cheer groups, and an elaborate post-marathon concert sure to close the race with a bang with artists ranging from Nada Surf to The Fabulous Rudies.”
