The Elements - Two Thumbs Up!
"This band has everything going for it, thanks largely to writers/vocalists Bud Mayer and Bob Hennessy," said the Hartford Advocate about The Elements in 1984. The alternative techno-pop band was founded in 1982 by Mayer, a classically trained pianist/composer from Cleveland, Ohio and Hennessy, an accomplished jazz/blues vocalist/harmonica player from Cape Cod, Mass. Their combine talents create refreshing, danceable, alternative pop music with socially conscious lyrics.
Their music has been described as energetic and witty, yet disciplined. "We draw from various electronic and acoustics sounds, ethnic rhythms and melodies which often results in some pretty unusual stuff," says Mayer. "We're not sure where it's going to end up," adds Hennessy, "but that's the beauty of combining the 'Elements (of Sound)' and see where it takes us." Known for their unusual instrumentation and effects, their recordings include anything from a '69 VW Beetle or a Farfisa organ to a thunderstorm and a distorted Hendrix influenced harmonica solo through a Pignose amplifier.
While eclectic sound effects and instrumentation are hallmarks of The Elements songs, their universal lyrics and accessible melodies are adaptable to other musical styles making these songs for the ages -- if not the Periodic Table.
- "...Sounds like Gruppo Sportivo at the best with wry, incredibly catchy melodies and deadpan vocals (from Hennessy)."
- "...when Mayer steps up to the mike for "I Can't Let You Go" everyone gets completely serious and the final product is a stunning tune that Paul Young would give his GQ subscription for."
