"NORTHAMPTON - The pioneering Valley rock band The Deadly Nightshade reclaimed a bit of past glory with a reunion show at the Iron Horse on Sunday night. The band played a 90 minute set in front of a nearly sold out house. The trio, featuring violinist/fiddler Helen Hooke, vocalist Anne Bowen and bass player Pamela Robin Brandt, mixed a set of originals with a great list of covers to work the crowd into a standing, cheering frenzy. The Deadly Nightshade [originally] set enough of a precedent as an all-female rock band to warrant space for their memorabilia in the Smithsonian. Two records and an opening slot for Billy Joel cemented the local band's spot on the national scene. Blending folk, rock, and bluegrass sentiments, Bowen, Hooke and Brandt shared the spotlight and vocals as they crooned through their back catalog, and Hooke ramped her fiddle into overdrive in a series of reels that culminated in "Orange Blossom Special."
