We are participating in this songwriting competition, and our understanding is that our adoring fans are certainly welcome to join us for this most unusual night of original music. Our latest RJ Entertainment songwriting competition has just been confirmed as The 3rd Annual Fergus Songwriting Competition which will be held at the Brewhouse On The Grand in Fergus (http://www.brewhouseonthegrand.ca/). It will begin April 5th and will run 13 weeks through until the finals on June 28th. Each week a minimum of 4 songwriter's will compete for the top 2 spots that will qualify them for 1 of 2 semi-final nights. From there the top 10 will move forward to the final night in which the top 3 songwriter's will receive the prizes including a grand first place prize of $1500. This will be songwriting competition #10 for us at RJ Entertainment and the events are always an amazing time to see up and coming songwriter's in your local communities. There will be 2 industry judges at the Brewhouse each week that will be selecting the winning songwriter's to move on to each next round.
There will be poets doing an open mic plus a band playing melodic and harmonic poetry and then also maybe some poets and musicians blending their chocolate and peanut butter to make something new.......sounds like a lot of fun to me!
This year THE CURIOUS have been really lucky to meet some interesting musicians from out of town, and here it has happened again! LIFE PROBLEMS is a costumed band consisting of seven core members from St Catharines and area. The lineup includes acoustic guitars, horns, strings and various percussion, and the sound has edge and drive with balls-out vocals and all sorts of twisted surprises, fusing elements of classical and folk, celtic punk and psychedelic rock. THE CURIOUS is a new London band fusing the stewing musical imaginations of Kevin Dunklee and Tom Heyda into a dark groove with elemental harmonies and transcendental rhythm. Keyboard, Guitar, Bass Clarinet, Bass, Drums, Percussion -- indescribable style that will make you dance without having to leave your seat. Show up in a costume -- just because it is fun to do so -- and bring whatever hand percussion or shakers you have and basically you can play all night -- maybe the show will become a drum circle -- that would be hot!!!! Friday, March 23 at The Black Shire 511 Talbot Street London, ON THE CURIOUS with LIFE PROBLEMS doors open at 9 -- show starts at 10 $5 at the door $3 with a costume $0 with a costume and percussion
Power duo -- THE SHANKS -- are coming to town, and they have requested the company of London's dark groovers -- THE CURIOUS. A night of contrast -- wear a creepy costume or dress like St. Patrick! This will be like nothing you have heard before!
Experience something COMPLETELY different this Friday, March 2 from 9 to 1 a.m. with THE CURIOUS and THE ERIC STACH FREE MUSIC UNIT. PWYC event. 105 Clarence (south of Horton) in London, Ontario. What you will get is something a bit unusual with a dark groove followed by an extension of jazz that lives outside of conventional time and melody and harmony -- just what it says -- Free Music Eric Stach and his Free Music Unit have been playing underground venues in London Ontario for decades -- now Eric has built his own studio and using it to hold concerts. Beautiful acoustics in a friendly environment -- really a place to stretch out and explore the possibilities of music. Eric puts musicians together and lets them communicate outside the normal boundaries of harmony, form and rhythm -- a treat but also a challenge for the musicians -- not for the faint-hearted. THE CURIOUS is a new group based in London which was seeded in a two-part collaboration. Kevin Dunklee is a composer who experiments with form and harmony -- his primary instrument is trumpet, and he has also been playing and composing on the piano all his life. Tom Heyda is a songwriter, singer, bass clarinet player and guitar innovator who also came to the table with a stack of songs. Meeting by chance, they really seemed to complement each other's work extremely well, so they continued to bounce ideas back and forth and then to include other instruments. They have now been working together in "the laboratory" for a bit over a year, and at this point they have developed a strong rhythm section with a good sense of the music -- which grooves in subtle ways sometimes and stretches in others......hard to really describe. In any case, it will really be a night of contrast..........but also a night of common exploration for all the musicians involved. Definitely like nothing you will normally see anywhere.......
