Q: I love your song Police State. What's the inspiration behind it?
A: hey mike! the song was inspired by my experience with the NYPD during the Occupy Wall Street protests. our non-violent protest camp was surrounded at all times by police officers, and eventually we were arrested, and had our possessions confiscated and in some cases destroyed (my husband's Silvertone guitar was smashed to smithereens). but the song is also about the larger role of corporations and governments using the police as an instrument to maintain the status quo -- Chase bank donated something like 4 million dollars to the NYPD during the the protest to "improve security in lower Manhattan." And our society's general move toward security culture, the NSA, etc., etc.! Thanks for asking!
