More About The Artist
Hobo has a hankerin' for the roots of American music: That would be early country, blues, jazz and rock. The band formed in November 2007 and has gigged steadily and with greater frequency ever since.
Led by singer-songwriter Freddie Allen Cook Jr., Hobo features two long-time live music veterans: Nathan McLain (Sweet Daddy, Disco Kickers, The Willies) and Richard Guerrero Jr. (Laughing Stock, Basic Language, The Krayons). Drummer Gil Harris has also performed and recorded in various projects through the years including The Man Pies.Multi-instrumentalist Garry Spitzer Jr. performs as a solo artist on occasion and is a former member of The Autumn Heat.
Based in Corpus Christi, Hobo is more than just music; Hobo is a shared philosophy. The quintet is fully portable; McLain plays a Pignose six-string, Cook a dobro, Harris plays snare and ride, Guerrero plays through a battery-powered amp and Spitzer joins in via the banjo and lap steel.
To that acoustic end, Hobo has played on city sidewalks, on a moving tram snaking through downtown C.C. and in the back of a pick-up truck at a nightspot on the city's South side. Most Hobo gigs take place at a downtown locale such as the House of Rock, the Executive Surf Club or Cassidy's Irish Pub ... to date, the band has shared stages with Hayes Carll, the South Austin Jug Band, The Golden Meanies, The Paul Sutherland Band, Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans, Big Bad Love and Ty Dietz, a local singer-songwriter who has collaborated with the band from time to time.
Hobo is presently putting the finishing touches on its first vinyl EP, "Hot Lettuce." The first 100 copies of the record will be housed in a sturdy StayFlat envelope complete with silk-screened art, hand-numbered and sold at shows.
Recent gigs include slots at The Surf Club, Tango Tea Room and at Ziegfest (fea. Joe Ely and Bob Schneider among others) in July as well as shows at the House of Rock and 4 parties/gigs in Austin/San Marcos in mid-August. Up next, College Station, Aug. 30.
