Bio
Hobo spent much of 2008 performing for gatherings and audiences across the city of Corpus Christi and beyond. The band played no less than 70 shows and also recorded a four-song debut 7 inch EP. Labels (especially those that release vinyl titles) interested in uncompromising roots music that is equal parts folk, country, blues and rock are advised to get in touch.
Hobo is ragged but real.
About
Hobo has a hankerin' for the roots of American music: That would be early country, blues, jazz and rock. The band formed in November 2007 and has gigged steadily and with greater frequency ever since.
Led by singer-songwriter Freddie Allen Cook Jr., Hobo features two long-time live music veterans: Pignose six-stringer Nathan McLain (Sweet Daddy, Disco Kickers, The Willies) and electric bassist Richard Guerrero Jr. (Laughing Stock, Basic Language, The Krayons). Drummer Gil Harris has also performed and recorded in various projects through the years including The Man Pies. Multi-instrumentalist Chad Petty performs with The Roolers.
Based in Corpus Christi, Hobo is more than just music; Hobo is a shared philosophy. The quintet is fully portable; McLain plays a Pignose six-string, Cook a dobro, Harris plays snare and ride, Guerrero plays through a battery-powered amp and Spitzer joins in via the banjo and lap steel.
To that acoustic end, Hobo has played on city sidewalks, on a moving tram snaking through downtown C.C. and in the back of a pick-up truck at a nightspot on the city's South side. Most Hobo gigs take place at downtown locales such as the House of Rock, the Executive Surf Club or Cassidy's Irish Pub.
To date, the band has shared stages with Two Tons of Steel, The Jackson Taylor Band, Hayes Carll, the South Austin Jug Band, psych rockers The Golden Meanies, The Paul Sutherland Band, Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans, hardcore punkers Till Death and Ty Dietz, a local singer-songwriter who has collaborated with the band from time to time. Hobo was a featured opener at Ziegfest 2008 and 2009 -- a positively sunny affair that included music by Cross Canadian Ragweed, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Blue October in '09 and Bob Schneider, Joe Ely and Kevin Fowler in '08.
Hobo's first vinyl EP, "Hot Lettuce," is available now. The band has sold out of its limited edition silk-screened cover package and limited edition CD version. However, fans can still pick up the green-colored single at shows. Hobo latest recording, "Live at the House of Rock," is now out and available from the band at shows.
