“New Orleans-based In Elevators is giving its cooly claustrophobic rock a chance to earn some sea legs by taking on a big tour that includes stretches from Ohio to New York then swoops back down to Florida and over to Texas. The Austin stop doesn’t come until the tail-end of that trip, but the trials of touring certainly won’t have beaten down these road warriors to the point they can’t deliver an impassioned garage-rock maelstrom. Besides, In Elevators has youth in its corner: The band formed in ’09 and has so far released an EP and one strong single, the chunky and driving “This Ship Is On Fire!””

“Review of the record: I was afraid that the songs wouldn’t play out well recorded, but I am happy to say that it translates beautifully. Keyboardist Kendall Holderr is able to shine and show her chops and almost steals the show on the killer track “The Glares”. But the song that really showcases the bands ability to rock the fuck out is the title track “This Ship Is on Fire!” With one of the most kickass song intros ever, thanks to Hawk and rhythm guitarist’s Paul Adams fuzzed out riffs, this song can’t help but bring a smile to your face. “The very first time I heard In Elevators was in a smoke filled bar in the middle of Memphis. As they meandered onto the stage, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but within the first 10 seconds of the song, I looked over at my friend and mouthed the words “oh my god.” She shared the same sentiment. As singer Matt Kramp climbed amps and turned his microphone into a scarf, guitarist Billy Hawk wailed the shit out of his guitar, pounding out every note to a crunchy perfection. Drummer Willy Wells was absolutely wild, screaming any second the music wasn’t playing, while the rest of the band kept up the same intensity.”

“Full of half-hearted fuzz riffs and basement jams, In Elevators self-titled debut is tight, snotty and pogo-worthy. Complete with youthful angst and lo-fi gristle, the opening distorted groove of ‘The Ship is on Fire!’ is surprising relaxed, as vocalist Matt – these guys don’t get bogged-down with formalities – is unmoved in his monotone delivery, while the remaining four-piece sound agitated, noisy and ever-so-slightly pissed-off. ‘The Glares’ meanwhile, contains joint motor-mouthing finger-pointing, as Kendall’s focused croon compliments Matt well. Chunky power chords and guitars awash with amplified buzz return in ‘For The Birds’ as Matt declares that there’s “nothing here for me, in this bed of lies,” with genuine, college-punk defiance.”
