Squirrel Hillbillies / Press

“Goody Shoes by The Squirrel Hillbillies (self-released): 4 stars out of 5 Pittsburgh folk duo the Squirrel Hillbillies impressed on their self-titled debut album a couple years ago and partners Jenny Wolsk Bain and Gary Crouth take things up a notch on enjoyable sophomore set “Goody Shoes.” The Hillbillies honed their chops performing live at the Three Rivers Arts Festival, Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival and assorted Calliope” Pittsburgh’s Folk Music Society gigs and it shows on this 12-track release. There isn’t a bad song to be found among the dozen original compositions, with Bain and Crouth soaring especially high on “I Can,” the bluesy title track, “Cowboy Song,” “Bless You Man,” “Jitney” and “Whisk You Away.” The Squirrell Hillbillies are doing the Burgh proud.”

“What's striking about the new full-length from The Squirrel Hillbillies is the amount of thought that clearly went into every aspect of it. From the art and liner to the well-crafted tunes and spotless recording, it's all done with an extra measure of care. Is there something slightly, well, nerdy about acoustic folk and blues played by a duo named after a comfy East End neighborhood? Maybe, but it's endearing, too, and this album is made with both talent and love.”
