ALL OR NOTHING. JUNGALISTS TO THE CORE. SPIZM = CHICAGO 2-PIECE LIVE DRUMS & BASS OUTFIT SINCE 2003. AFTER A 2 YEAR HIATUS SPIZM IS REUNITED AND PLANNING MASSIVE EVENTS IN CHICAGO, AROUND THE MIDWEST, THE WEST COAST, AND THE WORLD.
NEW RELEASES to be launced fall/winter 08 on Chicago's IZM RECORDS. SPIZM will be releasing a special limited edition CD pressing of "MOVEMENTS" full length (a collection of remixed old and new freespazz material) & a brand new EP "FAIL TO REMEMBER" with hits "B4uDIE" & "Lay Low". SPIZM's part of the local indie experimental electro-acoustic label and collective, IZM Records.
HISTORY--- SPIZM is a Chicago based 2-pieced orchestra of sound, literally...drum & bass. Forged out of a need for personal therapy from past angst-ridden relationshits that went south, Pablo and Dave started experimenting with the duo sound in September of 2003. Not even trying to setup an official band, it happened after a last minute performance invite to throwdown at a birthday party celebration in Evanston. There they met Bill from Carbondale, who helped Spizm embark on its first tour down to SIU only a month after starting. After returning, Spizm began performing improv sets with burgeoning musical motifs all around the city of Chicago, starting with their first Chi gig, at the now defunct Jinx Cafe in Wicker Park. For some time, the performances were geared towards skeletal structure and mostly raw improvisation, manic bursts, and sonic mayhem. BPMs maintained clocked at 200+. Very early on however, with spiz's curiosity for an electro-acoustic setup, the Roland SPD-S was purchased along with a very loud Roland amp. From this point on, Spizm began to mapout musical arrangements and setup the performances much like a DJ would with sampled transitional parts in between fully constructed movements.
After much experimentation & woodshedding the songs coalesced into their first and only studio release, an EP entitled "Movements I & II". This was recorded and released in April 2004 for a total of $100. Only 200 copies were made, and all are distributed. Then it got serious...tshirts, hoodies, logo stickers were made, and sold on a string of intense touring of the Midwest and an East coast tour. Poised and armed with a deadly jungalist/jazz/metal based drummer and a South American street-taught broken old upright-armed bassist, Spizm started building huge buzz in and out of Chicago, performing at spots such as Buddy Gallery, Mud Queens of Chicago, underground parties, and clubs.
Because of the motley mix & fusion of styles innate of the group, Spizm has been able to float within Chicago's diverse scene: DJ, hardcore/punk, jazz, avant garde, drumNbass, live electronica, and metal. Some of the many bands Spizm has performed with:::Sound Tribe Sector 9, TRS-80, Danny the Wildchild, Horse the Band!, Super Action Figures (johnny rabb), Buck 65, Zebo & Hess, Motion for Alliance, Echobase, Future Rock, Trioizm, Gratis, Metatron, Infinite Number of Sounds, No Doctors, Nebulous 9, The Financial Group, Expanding Man, Michael Columbia, Dark Water Transit, DJ/MC Haiku, MC Babble, 99 Stab Wounds, Scanner Darkly, MC=Hammer, and many many more I fail to remember.
Since reforming in October 2007 SPIZM has played with: Them Roaring Twenties {Fuck Mountain}, XOCA {members of INSHI}, Action Finger, Stationary Odyssey {members of GRATIS}, The Serengeti, KB Duo, Jason Steel Ensemble, GK Duo, Maurice & many others.
Spizm, after a wonderful short-lived but truly intense journey, broke things off in early april 2005 with a final show at Subterranean in Chicago, and took a year off. So it's been a year, and now SPIZM iz at it again, pablo & spiz are collaborating on new material, with a fresh angle on both drillNbass adding a new message to the sound. more on that...the full length recording that Spizm had been working towards but never did, is now in the works. We will be finishing "Movement III" which was our most intense of the movements, which comprised our live set's explosive ending. The live DVD that we'd like to get together...is to be edited and officially documented which will be released, in limited edition form, along with the full Movements album this year, late in 2007. Anyone that experienced Spizm live, knows that the music never let down, so look for upcoming events. All or nothing iz the philosophy, and we lived by it until we couldn't any longer. Now is the time to advance the sound and take the foundry to new levels of evolution. Spizm continues to forge the style known as FREESPAZZ, which is a term coined by drummer, SPIZ, refering to the mixture of freejazz improvisation, punk, dub, and metal's intensity along with a spaz-like drumming style filtering live drillNBass/IDM grooves.
Still to this day, the live jungle/dnb movement is being pushed all across the country and world. Another Chicago live uptempo breakbeat style being forged within Chicago, is Junglebop. Spiz's other band, Trioizm , which self-released the full-length "Junglebop" in june 05, coined this style. Currently pushing this style are Steps(74) & The Chicago Junglebop Syndicate which are new blood junglebop projects, with spiz on the drum throne. myspace.com/steps74 myspace.com/chicagojunglebop for more info. Chicago is the breeding ground for the New Thing. Checkout The Muse Cafe in Chicago for a place to begin hearing this style. For all those that dig Spizm, respekt! Other good sites connected with SPIZM are The Electro-Acoustic Workshop hosted by 7 League Boots at The Muse & The Jazztronik Experiment hosted by laptop DJ Don Solo & the Jazztronik Allstarts (these are both live electro-acoustic experimental events mixing live acoustic improvisation and electronic sounds.
