About
Epic Rock songs infused with Lush Soundscapes...
Speed of Life is not just a band to founder and songwriter John Zay, it’s a way of life. Since 2001 John Zay has been making music on his own terms. He prides himself on his projects musicianship and creative integration of multiple genres. While Speed of Life uses Rock songwriting as a format, to categorize the music as such would be false. The sound captures elements of live drum and bass, progressive rock, fusion, ambient, electronic, reggae and latin. In 2004 the band released their debut album "Mainstay" which played on over 160 college and commercial radio stations throughout the spring of 2005.
In January of 2007 John Zay & Speed Of Life released their follow up album “Catalyst”. The record expands upon the cross genre experimentation while defining each song’s essence as its’ first priority. The group creates a “sound-scape” to take the listener on a journey. It gives them an opportunity to truly absorb the music and songwriting, which is a brilliant mixture of personal thoughts, observations and politics. The release was followed by an extensive 2-month tour spanning up and down the east coast and across the U.S. On stage Speed of Life truly shines through with their raw energy and musicianship.
One of Zay’s other passions besides music, is surfing and the environment. “Catalyst” was printed on recycled paper and their website is powered by wind and solar energy. Zay also worked on Al Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth” and drives around in an old veggie oil Mercedes. Also, it was out in the ocean catching waves with in Costa Rica that Zay was inspired to write the bulk of “Catalyst”. John Zay & Speed of Life use their music to help educate people about global warming and the pollution of the oceans and beaches while inspiring them to live their life to the fullest.
When touring ended by 2008, Zay relocated the project to from NY to California. After setting up shop in LA and building his own studio, Zay is currently recording the 3rd Speed Of Life album with a host of great musicians from all over the world. John Zay & Speed of Life is on pace to start changing the world for the better. Through hard work, talent, musicianship, an unquenched resolve, political awareness and environmental concerns, they reach out to audiences across the country and audiences and critics reach back to them.
