Spacehotel was created in 2001 by Paul Timson (vocals, guitars, bass, synthesizers, programming, production) after the ending of his previous band 'Outsider'(1995-1999). As the driving force behind Outsider, Timson wanted to continue making music under a new name and a more developed and sometimes darker sound. The music could be described as varying mixes of indie rock and synth pop with a tendency towards introspective and sometimes angry or bleak lyrics and sound. Heavy synthesizer use is a feature of many Spacehotel tracks, along with overdriven electric guitar.

Spacehotel has been influenced by various bands of the 1980s and 1990s mostly Duran Duran and Mansun.
