Bio
Virgina's own Sonny Ratcliff came to New York City with a little money and a lot of songs. A multi - instrumentalist, he started playing guitar, bass, drums, and even banjo with many NYC and Brooklyn based bands and even started his own solo project. After a few years in the city, Sonny restarted his love of recording and released his first solo record in 2008.
About
"A new sound developing in NYC in the mind of a new guy in town.In the steps of Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Dave Grohl, and many others, Rocksalt Shotgun's Sonny Ratcliff steps off the bridge in his first solo effort. A mixture of Southern-fried Virgina Indie Rock and Love Songs, his influences and feelings are worn proudly on his sleave like a hard earned metal of honor.. If you've ever been around Sonny there is a chance you may be part of one of his songs. His songs vary from hard hitting riff rock to gentle melodic soundscapes with a few old fashion barn burners in between. Coming out of a past that ranges from Big Band and Combo Jazz to White Knuckled Punk Rock and Grunge, the textures in Sonny's songs are rich and complex. Keep an ear out for this new solo wonderkid." -www.garageband.com
The things you hear from me are true, I did this, I'm not some band with a lot of money, I'm not a group of kids that can go home if this all fails... My name is Sonny, and I'm a musician, of sorts anyways..
Growing up I listened to my Dad sing at Church every Sunday and would dream of standing in front of everyone. Saturday nights my parents would take us to Radford from Pulaski to get ice cream, Superman was my favorite, and listen to Solid Gold Saturday night on the radio. We'd get home and turn on the radio in the living room and dance around in our sock feet on the wood floor, listening to Elvis, The Beach Boys, The Monkees, Bobby Darrin, and my Fav Ricky Nelson. This is all I knew of music; Gospel, a little Bluegrass, and Sock Hop/Rockabilly; my parents had blocked MTV and VH1; Radio Hits and Top 40 would filter in here and there through my older brother, but everything really changed when I turned 12. At my birthday party a kid named Mark Vaughn gave me a cassette single of Radiohead's "Creep" with "Faithless the Wonderboy" on the B-side. I've still go it. This was not Elvis, not Michael Jackson, not Hillbilly, this was a baptism of my ears to something that would never go away, new music.
I'm still looking for it. I've played with a million bands; Jazz, Punk, Power Pop, Hip-Hop, Cover Bands, Psycadelic, Garage Rock, Bluegrass, Concert Bands, Orchestras, Digital, Singer Songwriter, Choirs, I've put more music out there than most of my closest friends even believe possible. The whole point is...here is some more. Please tell me if you like it, hell, tell me if you don't. Just...thank you for listening and being here to experience something not easy classified or genre bond. My new Genre... Post Genre.
