Q: What is the secret to writing a great song?

A: Well at least that's an easy one ;-P I wish I knew the exact answer - I would be rich I tell ya RICH!! I think about it a lot when I hear Imagine or What a Wonderful World or anything by the Beatles. How did they do that?? Write something so amazing yet so simple. I use to write when I was younger all the time - I wrote whatever I wanted and wrote every day. In 20 songs, 1 was good. Not sure I ever hit "great". Dolly Parton said the same thing - I write one new song everyday and after a year I have one great song. If you didn't like my song I pretty much had a hell with ya attitude. It's my song and I don't care what you think . Then we get older and we start to ask questions when we write. Will people like it. Is it the right style. The right form. Is it "commercial". Just like studying music in college - that kills the creative spark. I almost gave it all up - had to drop Music as my major. It was killing my desire to play. I spent hours analyzing Mozart - why did he do this and that - what was he trying to accomplish - etc. I figured old Wolfgang just wanted to get chicks. You can analyze something to death. Had one professor who finally said to me one day - Good music is good for what it's good for. Thank you Melvin Artley. I stopped being a music snob. Someone who looked down on music that wasn't "correct". So thankful I did too. What a lonely musical life that can be - you're just a critic. So now late in life - I'm back to being 20 again. I play covers for the crowd - I write for ME. If you don't like it - eh so what. I don't care anymore. If only one other person digs it - that's cool. So the short answer - a great song is a great song to whoever thinks it's great. Just do it with passion from the heart and don't second guess the how or why. Write because you have a voice and something to say. Write because you love someone. Write because you hate someone. Who gives a damn - Just WRITE!
