Q: What inspires the ideas to the songs you perform?
A: Hi Neal, Thank you for getting in touch! That's an interesting one! I am inspired by a plethora of musical genres and styles of performance. Having attained an A in Advanced Higher Music, I am familiar with the classical, romantic and impressionist eras of music and love to delve into that to aid my studies or to relax. I also listen to a lot of popular music. Currently, bands like Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, Iron and Wine and Frightened Rabbit are on repeat in my iTunes library! I take a lot of inspiration from the way these bands perform and how they manage to bring their songs to life on stage. My fashion and mannerisms on stage are inspired by the screen sirens, glamour models and burlesque dancers of the 1920's-50's. Names would include Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot and Bettie Page. More recently, I take inspiration for my fashion and performances from Dita Von Teese. Vocally, I don't tend to listen to other artists for inspiration. I feel that can be as much of a hindrance as a help. Instead, typical pre-recording preparations include listening to as many different versions of the song as I can find and letting my ears 'rest' for a few days so I can let my subconscious figure out the vocal line I'm happy with. I then go to record the song 'fresh', letting the vocal part come naturally and work from there. Thank you for your question, please do not hesitate to get back in touch! Regards, Sofia
