About
Sofa Society is the new audio moniker of Adrian Yeo, a restless sonic youth with a passion for music and a penchant for dreaming up madcap projects to fulfil his creative urges.
While studying in the UK (1997-2001), he decided to indulge in music production during his free-time. Inspired by the irresistible rhythms and infectious basslines played at the London clubs, he ventured making his own music by dabbling with sampled breaks. Armed with a laptop and some sequencing software, his first audio project U:tama was born in 1999.
The name "U:tama" was chosen to represent Singapore in the worldwide electronic dance scene. The music of U:tama is predominantly chilled out, often awashed with a huge atmospheric wall of sound and tense rhythms. It has been described as "space lounge music for martini drinkers" and "melancholic twilight beats". U:tama is more about the mood than anything else.
With a first album release on mp3.com in 1999 -- the now extremely rare Electrospiralharmonies -- U:tama gained huge popularity and was frequently featured in the global chart rankings of mp3.com, Ampcast and Besonic. The cult favourite swing-inspired track Loungecore was released in a Japanese breakbeat compilation alongside Howie B and received regular airplay in Tokyo.
U:tama's musical momentum picked up rapidly and an official album was finally released for retail in 2002, entitled Beautiful Dusk under Adrian's own record label, Creamtone (dedicated to showcasing undiscovered Singaporean producers).
Sofa Society is the next evolution of U:tama, featuring a more mature and organic sound with the same textured soundscapes and laidback vibes. The next album is currently in the works with a Matthew Herbert-inspired track already nearing completion... watch this space.
