“Second year in a row Smoke Ring voted top three metal bands in Indianapolis. Smoke Ring gladly accepts.”

“Punk & Metal 2010 in Review: Local metal Posted by Jeff Napier on Wed, Dec 29, 2010 at 1:00 PM Two Retro-cool metal albums that demand to be taken seriously: Smoke Ring, Death of Love and The Cocaine Wolves, Royal Feast These bands occupy this list for different reasons. Many people fail to give Smoke Ring the attention they deserve, perhaps because they sound like they stopped paying attention to new music in 1986. On this year's Death of Love, lead singer Chris Wisner finally found a band that can make things happen. Listen to "Hell's River" and "Life is Four" for some of the best old school boogie-fried metal around. ”

“......At that same gig, my old pal Jeff Stiner slid me a copy of the new Smoke Ring CD, Fell in the Right Place, also recorded by Mahern at Farm Fresh. It is a surprisingly solid listen, Chris Wisner is sounding better then I've heard him in ages, and the band is tightassed throughout. Even as they seem to be working out whether they want to be Blackfoot or the Black Crowes, Songs like "Lonely and Frustrated" and "Fine Lookin'" are great blasts of no-frills rock that is in short supply these days. Plus, you just gotta respect a band like Smoke Ring, a band that doesn't get a crack at the "cool" gigs or receive an iota of the hype that some of the sweater-wearing kitten-lovers in this city do, yet they are always hustling their own shows and drawing enough of a crowd to be able to pay Mahern to record them AND get the CD out, and they'll probably sell at least as many as the new Thunders or Stereo Deluxe. so, good on 'em. Long may their Rebel Flag fly. -Jeff Napier ”
