Bio
Sister Says is the musical vision of Vancouver-based sister and brother act Gillian and Robert Thomson. The two write their songs using different methods; Robert, arranging and composing alone with his keyboard in a lonely dark room and Gillian most comfortable huddled in bed with clothing strewn across her floor. Somehow they are able to combine their talents and make it work. Their music evokes an older era but surprises with its unique arrangements tapping into numerous styles including singer-songwriter pop, neo-soul, funk, and jazz. Gillian’s lyrics are heart-breaking as she reacts to the world around her. Using her writing as a diary, her words are bitter-sweet and real. Always soulful and at times dark Robert’s arrangements fit perfectly with her style of writing. In the song “Give me my Love” she reveals her romantic side even in the most unusual conditions writing “we walked to cemeteries, wiped dust off graves. When I die I want someone’s name next to me you say you want to be cremated”. Currently the two are working on their debut album at Q-Music studios in Toronto. Here they work with the likes of Robert Piltch Toronto’s finest jazz guitarist, Rob Sibony (Esthero) laying down the drum grooves, and Donald Quan (Loreena Mckennitt) who is producing Sister Says as well as playing whatever he can get his hands on including the accordion, viola, piano, keyboards and organ. Sister Says also records locally at the North Vancouver based Bakerstreet Studios recording and playing live with Vancouver’s talented players, Jeff Younger the guy to call for solid jazz guitar improvisations, Sam Cartwright (A Ghost to kill Again) who has laid down some heavy funk grooves and Rick Hopkins who has added his fabulous and always tasteful piano skills.
