Q: What kinds of vocal exercises does James do to acquire that velvety screech level output that would make David Lee Roth cry like a little baby?
A: James here. Your question gave me a good laugh. I don't know about making David Lee Roth cry, but I can definitely shed some light on some vocal techniques that I've learned through my personal experience. For the most part, I am a self-taught vocalist. My first step was I quit smoking cigarettes. I cannot stress enough at how impossible it would have been to get my voice to sound this way if I had not quit smoking cigarettes. Singing requires air (durrrr), but your lungs need to be able to expand as much as possible for those high notes. This style of singing uses high-pressure output, and that can require an immense amount of air to be held for long periods. Swimming and cardio are the best ways to train your lungs for such a task. We have a basketball hoop at our practice space, so that's what I use. As far as actual vocal exercises, virtually none. There's only one I would recommend, as it's the only one that I believe has actually worked for me. This exercise can be used for strengthening your 'connecting voice', which is used for those badass scream notes. First, accept that you're going to look and sound like a silly jackass for a minute. That's the first step. Second, pick a song that you like to sing. I try to pick songs that contain notes I'm trying to build up to; songs that I wouldn't be comfortable singing in a performance. Step three, begin buzzing your lips and humming the song. You should be humming with your higher register, that is, with your higher octave. It's not the loudest exercise, and it should be fairly effortless if you're doing it right. The muscles that you want to be working are the ones directly underneath your chin. While your humming and buzzing, feel the muscles directly behind the chin and cheek line on your neck. If the muscles are tense during the exercise, you're doing it right. It sounds silly, but I swear it works. Those are the muscles used to hit those super notes. This exercise, when practiced on a
