The Wailing Souls:
Fusing the harmonies of Motown with the roots and dancehall sounds of reggae, The Wailing Souls have ridden the crest of Jamaica's music for more than four decades. Nominated for Grammy awards three times, the group scored hits with classic roots reggae tunes, War and Bredda Gravlicious, Firehouse Rock, and 1992 album and title track, All Over The World. Additionally, the group scored number one hits with Things and Time, Jah Jah, Old Broom, and Shark Attack. The Wailing Souls' recording career has been nothing short of historic. Vocally trained by Bob Marley and the Wailers' teacher, Joe Higgs, they worked with legendary reggae producers including Coxson Dodd of Studio One, Henry 'Junjo' Lawes,
Channel One Studios, Delroy Wright, Lloyd 'King' Jammy’s, as well as recording several early tunes at Bob Marley's Tuff Gong Studio. The Wailing Souls attracted global attention when their music was featured in the 1993 Disney film, Cool Runnings. The soundtrack album was an international hit, selling nearly half a million copies worldwide. The Souls had three songs on this soundtrack including the hit, Picky Picky Head. Formed in Trench Town, Kingston, Jamaica, in the late-1960s, The Wailing Souls have experienced numerous transformations. Their discography (over 26 albums to date) includes singles recorded as The Renegades, Pipe & the Pipers, and Atarra. Sly & Robbie and the Roots Radics are only a few of the stellar musicians who have worked with The Wailing Souls. Still one of the most powerful forces in Reggae, The Wailing Souls continue to tour globally and record new songs with the vigor that they had singing in Kingston's Trench Town decades ago.
Not often you find a drummer as the band leader, composer, and original member. Jeff Allgrove formed the reggae band Pure Roots in 2007. Juan Alvarez, Akim Anderson & Jazz Hayhurst are the core members alongside Allgrove. This powerful reggae act has performed with many greats, playing sold out shows and stunning crows. The band's heavy hitting bass lines, melodic grooves, and lively horn section makes Pure Roots stand out amongst other acts.
Based out of Santa Cruz, California, Pure Roots has often performed as an all instrumental band, and currently is the backing band for Andrew Reid (Son of reggae legend Junior Reid). Many guest vocalists have been featured with Pure Roots such as Briana Kai & Judah.
Pure Roots released their first single "Jah The Highest" and the dub remix "Jah The Dubbest" in January 2012, featuring reggae legend Junior Reid and rising star Briana Kai, recorded and produced by Right Vibes Productions with Jeff Allgrove in the ESI Sound Studio with JR Records. The songs are available internationally on itunes and most major media sites, and has received airplay in the United States, South America, Europe & Japan.
In April 2012 Pure Roots featuring Andrew Reid completed a 7 city tour with Daniel "Bambaata" Marley. In 2012 Pure Roots was featured at The 17th Annual Monterey Bay Reggae Festival with their three piece horn section. Pure Roots has shared the stage with international artists such as Black Uhuru, Israel Vibration & Roots Radics, The Abyssinians, Don Carlos, Junior Reid, Michael Rose, The Melodians and many more. Pure Roots is currently in the studio working on the album "Youth Rising," featuring Andrew and his brother Wada and their father Junior Reid, the album is expected to be released internationally in 2013.
In 2013 Pure Roots is going strong and can be found recording as well as touring in May through June with legendary Jamaican artists The Wailing Souls. They will be ending their tour at the 2013 Reggae In The Desert performing the Main-stage before The Wailing Souls, Marcia Griffiths & Steel Pulse. In March 2013 a brand new HD video "Pure Roots Live In San Francisco HD" was released internationally. Keep a close eye out for this hard-hitting band.
