The Third Expression
Date and Time
Thursday, May 16th, 2013 at 8:00pm
The Third Expression is looking forward to a great night of music on Thursday, May 16 at the finest listening room in the Triangle, Marsh Woodwinds Upstairs. Our favorite North Carolina guitarist Bernie Petteway and his stellar trio will be sharing the bill with TTE at this show and we will be making a live recording of this event! There will also be some musical 'cross pollination' happening between the two groups during the course of the evening. We had a great time at our last shinding together at MWWU and expect this show to be packed with lovers of guitar music.
Marsh Woodwinds Upstairs
The Bernie Petteway Trio
This incredibly talented trio includes guitarist Bernie Petteway, drummer Ed Butler and bassist Robbie Link. Bernie Petteway was one of the founding members of legendary jazz-fusion group 3PM which EER-MUSIC.com's tribute page called "one of the most unknown and underrated jazz rock fusion bands to have ever existed". A veteran of many R&B ensembles, Bernie shares his many guitar playing talents with musicians and groups as diverse as the North Carolina Symphony, contra dance group Contrazz, eclectic acoustic string band Stringfellows and the 'alt-Americana' Crooked Mile Band. He has recorded and/or appeared in concert with nationally known artists as diverse as Pat Benatar, Erich Kunzel (conductor St. Louis Symphony), Neil Sedaka, Bee Gees, Tito Puente, Roger McGuinn (The Byrds), and many others. A primarily self taught musician, he has studied privately with jazz legends Pat Martino, Howard Roberts, and Howard Morgen. Percussionist Ed Butler has performed with acts including Michelle Shocked, The Thelonius Society and The Micro-East Collective. Bassist Robbie Link is a veteran performer/teacher involved with many jazz, chamber music and folk ensembles performing everything from Baroque to Bluegrass.

An evening with The Third Expression contains layers of melody, texture and atmosphere that extend beyond the ordinary.
The Third Expression features guitarist Mike Krause, bassist Jane Francis, drummer Chris Stephenson and pedal steel guitarist Nathan Golub, musicians who have performed and/or recorded as sidemen with a wide spectrum of established artists from North Carolina and beyond including Tift Merritt, Caitlin Cary (Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Ryan Adams), Big Al Anderson (NRBQ, World Famous Headliners, Nashville hit songwriter), Taj Mahal, Chris Stamey, Thad Cockrell, International Orange (Ben Folds Five, The Old Ceremony, Bus Stop), Andy Kuncl, The Connells, the North Carolina Symphony, Chapel Hill Philharmonia, Velvet, Katherine Whalen (Squirrel Nut Zippers), John Howie Jr. and the Rosewood Bluff, Michael Rank and Stag, JKutchma & The Five Fifths and members of Patty Griffin, Levon Helm, The Jayhawks and the Dex Romweber Duo among others.
