A Madison favorite, Senegalese singer, guitarist and percussionist Baaba Maal is an international superstar whose releases range from contemporary Afropop to traditional West African music. âSimultaneously traditional and contemporary, this is a towering work of art,â says Music Week. The celebrated master-musician Maal will perform songs off his latest multi-lingual album âTelevision.â Subtly blending electronic dance elements with the timeless tradition of West African music, the record is a groundbreaking successor to 2001âs Grammy-nominated âMissing You.â That album was released the year Maal closed the South Africa Free Mandela Concert in Londonâs Trafalgar Square and headlined at the Hollywood Bowl. âI think the musicianâs role is to give advice, to warn people, and to make them aware of what they might not have thought of themselves. We use melodies and harmonies to make songs enter your mind,â says Maal, who will be featured in Bonaroo in June. This concert is sponsored by the Wisconsin Union Directorate. Support is also given by the Wisconsin Arts Board, Anonymous Fund, Capital City Hues, ETC, Maximum Ink, The Onion, Wisconsin Union Theater Endowment Fund, and WORT 89.9 FM.
