Talen Campbell
He has duchenne (pronounced doo-shane, or doo-shin, I guess depending on who is saying it) muscular dystrophy. It's the most common type of muscular dystrophy, but there's only about 20k boys in the US that have it. It primarily affects boys, girls don't usually develop duchenne but they are the carrier. It's inherited from the mother in 2/3 of cases, spontaneously developed in utero in the other 1/3. My wife (Lisa) doesn't have a family history, so we think that Talen is in the 1/3 of cases that develop spontaneously, but we're waiting til his next visit to the MDA clinic in October before Lisa gets the genetic screening to know for sure.
It causes progressive muscle failure, starting in the hip/upper leg area and working down until kids lose the ability to walk (between 8-12 years of age normally). Later (usually between 14-18ish) it progresses through the arms, hands, neck, etc. It also affects the diaphragm and heart, so kids with DMD usually end up dying sometime in their 20's from cardiomyopathy (heart disease) or respiratory insufficiency. A lot of kids are on a ventilator by the time they're 20.
Those numbers are starting to skew up a little bit, but not much. In the 1960's, the average life expectancy was 14.4 years, right now I believe it's around 25.5 years. There's no cure for it, and no treatment that does anything other than extending their ability to independently walk for a couple of years. I've been tracking progress on a number of treatment options that are in clinical/pre-clinical phases right now, though, and I think that there's a decent chance that something big might be on the horizon. I hope so anyway.
