Songstress Loene Carmen, described as inhabiting ‘an intangible, magical, rarefied space, somewhere between Tom Waits and Dolly Parton’ has independently released four critically acclaimed albums.
Current opus It Walks Like Love has received glowing reviews (‘magnetically absorbing’ ‘completely compelling’ 'the beauty of the French chanteuse and the intensity of the Dirty Three') and solidified her ever growing reputation as a songwriter of note. Carmen's always evolving lineup currently features members of the Mess Hall, Holy Soul and Bridezilla.
It’s always been about the voice...beauty and danger, knowing and innocence, sex and longing, and love – both sacred and profane... Loene Carmen’s individual mix of torch blues, gothic country, with occasional outbreaks of smoky nightclub has seduced many who hear it. She sings it, you believe her. And that’s enough. Matt Bailey (Paradise Motel, Sir, Lee Memorial) makes his first Sydney appearance in several years, for what will be the belated launch of his second solo album, Book of Illumination.
Produced by Brent Punshon (Adalita, Smog, Nation Blue, The Slits etc) at Melbourne’s Head Gap Studios, Book of Illumination has been called “an eerie exercise in dark minimalism ” (messandnoise).
Recorded live in the studio, on electric piano, the songs are augmented by Melbourne jazz-improv saxophone legend Adam Simmons. “ ….haunting, spacious and captivating; the narratives rich and textured.” (Beat)
Devotional is the new name for Australian three-piece A Casual End Mile. The band formed after singer/songwriter Madelaine Lucas collaborated with Luke Bacon and Rob Irish on her debut release 'Devils and Devotion' (2010), produced by Chris Townend at BJB Studios.
Devotional have become renowned for their unique aesthetic, which conjures haunting images of sincere, archaic romanticism. With the release of their single 'Mercy' (2012), the band have further developed their sound, which flirts with the genres of folk, shoegaze and alternative-rock; drawing comparisons to Mazzy Star, The Dirty Three, and Big Star. The result is both strikingly earnest and otherworldly. Their self-recorded and self-produced EP is due for release later this year.
