Private Show: DRIFTER:
Personalities of every ilk drift into the city continually.
These two, for instance: a rising musical artist from Miami, recently returned from touring overseas, and a visual artist on sabbatical from his university teaching post in Maryland. It seems the cliché about New York as maker of unlikely and fortuitous matches is rooted in something real. The city can be more forest floor than concrete jungle, where people like seeds carried on the air fall and flourish side by side, if not in perfect harmony, at least in sometimes very surprising clusters.
Maxidus is a songwriter and vocalist whose performances draw heavily on his background as a dancer/choreographer and his commitment to serious musicianship. He landed in New York this year via touring dates in Europe and, more recently, Israel. His energetic dance tracks come out of the expansive traditions of hip-hop poetics, often inflected with overtones of his Jamaican origins.
Brooke Rogers is a painter masquerading as a printmaker in his latest suite of images. They have the look of 15th-century etchings, but they are actually one-offs. The scratchboard drawing technique he uses allows for incredibly fine line work and tonal variations through an accretion of delicate marks over long hours of solitary scraffiti. While the subject of these images is an inveterate traveler, a cosmic drifter, the artist himself works more in the mode of a scribe than a songster. Brooke, it would seem, is the cloistered monk to Maxidus’ circuit rider.
Although…they both came to New York.
So they had a meeting of the minds. They came together over their desire to honor the ONE WHO IS through what they create, and a vision to share it with all who would look and listen. “Drifter Themes: An Evening of Art and Music at Space 38|39” is their offering.
