FAURE Pavane
BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 2
MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 3 “Scottish”
This second weekend of SummerFest performances begins with the electricity and inventiveness of Simone Dinnerstein, the pianist whose albums have topped Billboard’s Classical Charts since her debut in 2007. Dinnerstein will be playing Beethoven’s piano concerto No. 2, filled with inspired phrases and themes which showcase the pianists’ talents in demanding passages – the composer himself played the first performance in 1795. The shimmering sound-scape of Faure’s Pavane begins the concert, reminding the listener of the delicate surroundings of Tahoe in summer, and the concert ends back in Scotland, where on his travels Mendelssohn found the inspiration for a new work, writing “I found today in the Chapel of Mary Queen of Scots the beginning of my Scottish Symphony.” He then wrote the first ten bars of music which begins the Symphony.
