Angelo Moore began his career in the early l980s as lead singer, saxophonist, and creative force behind the legendary band, Fishbone. Fishbone’s ability to blend social commentary and humor with a blazing fusion of rock, punk, funk, jazz, ska, reggae, gospel and R&B led to their recognition as one of the most notable acts in American music. After over 25 years in the biz, Moore continues his role as frontman of Fishbone. The band has released l0 full-length albums. They have created the music for movies such as “Last Action Hero” (Arnold Schwarzennager), “The Mask” (Jim Carrey) and been featured with roles in movies such as “Idlewild” (Outkast) and “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka” (Keenan Wayan). Angelo has additionally collaborated with the likes of Little Richard, Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton, Rick James and Spike Lee to name but a few.
A versatile artist, Angelo performs under the guise of his wildly energetic alter ego, Dr. Madd Vibe. Linking poetry, performance and music, this visceral artist’s solo performances range from pure spoken word and movement to playing the Theremin and various saxophones as well as reciting poetry accompanied by the Dr. Madd Vibe Aukestra. Stemming from his experiences growing up as a “fly in the buttermilk” in the predominantly white suburbs of Los Angeles, Angelo Moore addresses “Real Racism,” “Social Corrosion,” “Spiritual Overtones,” “Family Affairs,” “Personal Satisfactions and Suffocations” and the human condition in a world gone mad. Dr. Madd Vibe brings a spiritual and cathartic dimension to his performances in the tradition of innovators such as George Clinton, Sun Ra and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Between l997 and 2010, his solo efforts have spawned literary books and comic books that come equipped with soundtracks and the full-length album entitled “Dr. Maddvibe’s Medicine Cabinet” in which he wrote and played all of the music and instruments. Angelo has also created a Dr. Maddvibe orchestra with whom he has directed and performed in venues in the United States and in Europe. Angelo Moore has taken his spoken word and sound power to the stage throughout the world and has appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show, The Magic Johnson Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and Roseanne show. Angelo has performed as a poet at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Black Rock Coalition benefits and was featured speaker of the Spitfire Tour. Most recently, he has published “Dr. Madd Vibe’s Ivy League Invasion,” a book of poetry published in conjunction with his artist residency at Yale University (2007).

Boots Riley is a co-founder of the politically powerful hip hop group the Coup, which became a cultural flash point after September 11 (Their album Party Music was to be released on 9-15-01 but was pulled because the cover depicted turntables in the foreground, and the exploding World Trade Center in the background - talk about bad timing!).
Riley's activism – from local issues to international ones such as being an organizer of the World Conference Against Racism - has set the standard for political organizing among hip hop artists. The focus of Boots' lectures uses a revolutionary class analysis to examine the relationship between the commercialization of hip-hop music and culture and US economic imperialism and racism. Boots takes audiences on an international journey through the less orthodox histories and movements of hip-hop, including a screening of Eating Forever - a short hip-hop travelogue Boots shot in South Africa during the "Black August" Hip Hop tour and the World Conference Against Racism, that focuses on Kwaito, a controversial movement of South African hip hop.
Boots draws on his two decades of creating radical social change in a lesson on approaching grassroots organizing through music and culture. From his history of student organizing in Oakland's public schools, to serving on the central committee for the Progressive Labor Party, being the President of InCAR (International Committee Against Racism), and organizing to build California's Anti-Racist Farm Workers' Union, Riley has been an integral part of the progressive struggle for radical change through culture. He developed "guerrilla hip hop concerts" (mobile concerts on flat bed trucks) and produced "audio hip hop newspapers," tens of thousands of which were distributed to the Oakland community. He co founded the Young Comrades in 1994, a politically oriented community group that staged free concert - rallies and dedicated itself to working on material reform issues.
This is an empowering and eye-opening opportunity to interact and strategize with one of the most influential and outspoken figures in the hip-hop community fighting for social justice today.
Casual, is a legendary rapper from Oakland, California and one of the founding members of the hip hop collective Hieroglyphics. After his debut album Fear Itself garnered both critical and commercial success, Casual went on to become one of the most prominent and recognizable faces on the Hieroglyphics roster. Casual aka Smash Rockwell has garnered a following amongst devoted hip hop fans, particularly in the Bay Area hip hop scene, largely due to his specialization in hardcore battle rhymes.
After high-profile appearances on Del tha Funky Homosapien and Souls of Mischief albums, Casual followed suit in 1994 with Fear Itself. The album was the second-highest charting album in Hieroglyphics' history. Casual followed a typical verse-chorus-verse structure but stood out with his ferocious but playful battle lyrics. Casual has been acclaimed for "wielding his metaphors and sinewy delivery with lethal grace"
After the release of Fear Itself, Casual (as well as fellow Hieroglyphics members Souls of Mischief) was dropped from Jive Records. Casaul documents the experience in the book, Hip Hop in America: A Regional Guide: Volume 1: East Coast and West Coast:"
It came about from us getting dropped from major labels, and instead of folding and succumbing to defeat, we hit the ground running. We took what we had and ran with it, we landscaped and we built something. We had to be resourceful, creative, and clever to gain our niche but now...it's been 10 years since we've busted out independent."
In 1994, Casual was involved in a high profile battle with rapper Saafir. The beef originally started when Saafir appeared on Casual's debut album, and Casual did not appear on Saafir's. This ignited the infamous "Hiero vs Hobo Junction" battle, which involved some controversy when rumors surfaced that Saafir was using pre-written raps as opposed to Casual and Hieroglyphics expected freestyling. Despite this, it is regarded as an influential battle in underground hip-hop's history.
Casual has expressed, much like the rest of the Hieroglyphics crew the importance of competition in hip hop, stating "I think that MCing should be a competitive thing, almost like a sport. The only way an MC can keep polishing and sharpening his skills is to test them against the competition and the up and coming young bloods."
Casual contributed considerably to both Hieroglyphics albums 3rd Eye Vision (1998) and Full Circle (2003), and is typically found rapping on as well as producing tracks on almost all Hieroglyphics-related releases. While staying mostly on the underground scene and not achieving significant commercial success aside from his debut, Casual is widely respected as an MC, even appearing on the artwork for A Tribe Called Quest's album Midnight Marauders.
