In 2011, with street repairs and a slow economy making problems on Gaines, locals realized something needed to be done. They knew that if everyone pulled together they could benefit the businesses and showcase the art, food, and music happening all around them. People who worked, played, and lived on Gaines Street pitched in and soon the first Gaines Street Fest was born.
That first Fest featured more than 30 bands like Girls on Film, Only Thieves, and Chilled Monkey Brains in venues like St. Michael’s Pub, The Engine Room, and Farside. Area restaurants Voodoo Dog and Fat Sandwich, joined by local food trucks, tempted the crowd’s taste buds. Locally owned businesses like Phaze One, Olde Fields, and Avant Garb treated customers to sidewalk sales and specials. In 2012, everyone outdid themselves. More than 100 Tallahassee performers, from rock bands to belly dancers, played all day on half a dozen stages both inside venues and out, all within a few blocks. Shops reported having record breaking days. Restaurants ran out of food from serving so many people.
This year we're going bigger and better! If you would like to get involved, please message Taylor Biro here or at firstname.lastname@example.org - the Fest needs:
- local vendors
- local organizations who would like to put out a table
- street performers
- drag queens
- face painters
- balloon sculptors
- willing hands
- anything else you can think of.
